Apparel Care and the Environment

Apparel Care and the Environment PDF Author:

ISBN:
Category : Alternative technologies
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Representatives of textile and apparel manufacturers, the dry cleaning industry, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), international standards organizations, and others gathered in Washington, DC on September 9-10, 1996, for 'Apparel Care and the Environment: Alternative Technologies and Labeling.' 'Apparel Care and the Environment' brought together key stakeholders to learn about developments in alternative technologies and care labeling, and to discuss the focus of future efforts. Participants shared a common goal: to reduce the impact of apparel care on the environment. Although most dry cleaners currently use the toxic chemical perchloroethylene to clean garments, alternative technologies such as wet cleaning are emerging and becoming commercially viable. Wet cleaning is a professional garment cleaning process that uses the controlled application of soap and water. One barrier to the expansion of alternative technologies is current garment care labeling practices which specify dry clean only for most garments requiring professional cleaning.

Environmental Regulations and Industrial Competitiveness

Environmental Regulations and Industrial Competitiveness PDF Author: Ward Thomas
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031263766
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 93

Book Description
While polluting industries in the U.S. continue to emit billions of pounds of toxic chemicals into the air, land and water every year, many economists and policy makers argue that environmental regulations stifle economic growth and reduce the standard of living for the American people. This book takes a fresh look at this question through three case studies of highly regulated polluting industries in the Southern California region: metal finishing, wood furniture, and dry cleaning. The case studies are based on a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, including in-depth interviews with corporate managers and environmental regulators. The authors find that there is no universal pattern for predicting the effects of environmental regulations on industrial competitiveness, but that the outcomes depend on the structure of the industry being regulated, the design of the regulations, and the technologies that are available for compliance. The book is written in straight forward language that is accessible to the non-economist and will prove an essential resource for academics and students of all levels, and professionals and policy makers in the fields of environmental policy and regional economic development.

Tetrachloroethylene in the Dry Cleaning Sector

Tetrachloroethylene in the Dry Cleaning Sector PDF Author: Canada. Environmental Protection Directorate. Pacific and Yukon Region
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780662250289
Category : Dry cleaning industry
Languages : en
Pages : 39

Book Description
Presents findings of consultations with stakeholders from government, industry, and environmental and health organizations regarding environmental management options for tetrachloroethylene (also known as PERC) used in the dry cleaning industry. Begins with an overview of the toxicity of PERC, its uses in Canada, its releases into the environment from a life cycle management perspective, and a technical and socio-economic profile of the dry cleaning industry. Environmental management options are then discussed, including an economic analysis undertaken for each option (costs to dry cleaners and government, benefits in PERC reduction). Technical projections of PERC use are also made for four scenarios involving various intervention measures in relation to a base case (no intervention). Collateral considerations discussed regarding wastes from PERC dry cleaning, other cleaning technologies, and fabric care labelling. Recommendations are provided on options for managing the life cycle risks associated with PERC releases from the dry cleaning sector.

Anticancer Living

Anticancer Living PDF Author: Lorenzo Cohen PhD

Book Description
“The health-care revolution continues . . . an accessible, science-based approach to wellness.” —Andrew Weil, MD What if we could make basic, sustainable lifestyle changes that could prevent us from getting cancer? What if those with cancer could improve their chances of living long, vibrant lives? The evidence is now clear: at least 50 percent of cancer deaths can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle changes. But many—patients and doctors included—still don't realize the simple changes we can make to increase chances of survival, or aid in the healing process for those with a diagnosis. Introducing the concept of the "Mix of Six," Lorenzo Cohen and Alison Jefferies make an informed case that by focusing on six key areas of health and wellness, you can support treatment or reduce your risk for developing cancer altogether. An accessible, prescriptive guide to wellness based on the latest scientific findings, Anticancer Living outlines a path to radically transform health, delay or prevent many cancers, support conventional treatments, and significantly improve quality of life. “Anticancer Living will empower millions of people with information they can use to reduce their risk of getting cancer and improve their chances of surviving a cancer diagnosis. Highly recommended!” —Dean Ornish, MD, author of The Spectrum
