Antecedentes: El síndrome de Down o trisomía 21, es considerado la aneuploidía altamente frecuente de cromosomas autosómicos, también conocido como la condición de etiología genética más importante y prevalente de la discapacidad significativa intelectual en el ser humano, siendo la trisomía del par 21 la causante del 95% de los casos de síndrome de Down. En estos individuos se encuentran bien definidas las alteraciones sistémicas, pero no hay consenso en la literatura sobre la prevalencia de las manifestaciones de la cavidad oral, incluyendo alteraciones funcionales e infecciosos. La frecuencia de patología es mayor en las personas con síndrome de Down al ser comparado con la población general. La caries dental y las enfermedades periodontales se consideran un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial. Los individuos con síndrome de Down muestran alta sensibilidad de padecer problemas orales y, por ello, el manejo específico en estas poblaciones de las enfermedades periodontales y la caries dental es muy importante. Dada la relevancia del biofilm dental en la causa de la caries, los enfoques de manejo probiótico han sido empleados para combatir los patógenos orales sin dañar al huésped. Múltiples estudios se han concentrado en la correlacción entre los probióticos y la microbiota del biofilm dental, y la posibilidad de reducir los recuentos de bacterias cariogénicas en la cavidad oral.Objetivo: Estudiar lamicrobiota subgingival de personas con síndrome de Down y evaluar sus posibles implicaciones en la salud bucodental.
