Nuestras vidas se entretejen con los comportamientos de otras personas y en general lo que observamos se considera algo real. Pero hay ocasiones en que nuestra experiencia en el contexto de las relaciones interpersonales, de pareja, de familia y sociales pueden parecernos extrañamente irreales, porque no comprendemos la distancia entre lo aparente que captan nuestros sentidos y la verdad de lo que está ocurriendo. Cuando existen esas condiciones es posible que estemos tratando de entender a alguien que sufre un trastorno de la personalidad. Nuestra poca información acerca de estos trastornos nos implica con quienes los padecen y nos causan gran desconcierto y consternación. Los trastornos de la personalidad se consideran como una organización estructurada que manifiesta un patrón disfuncional de la conducta. Son estables a lo largo del tiempo, con defectos de la organización interna, se consideran inflexibles, incapacitan al individuo para funcionar bien y causan un gran sufrimiento a sí mismos y a otros. La vida es particularmente difícil cuando estamos vinculados con alguien amado que no tiene suficiente salud mental ó padece de un trastorno de la personalidad que nos involucra en conductas inestables a lo largo del vivir. En ocasiones es sumamente difícil hallar formas de convivencia con seres que tienen emociones, conductas y acciones extrañas y que su sentido de la realidad es sesgado ó francamente distorsionado, sin poder entender exactamente a que se debe, en especial cuando se trata del Trastorno Límite de la Personalidad. La comprensión de esos eventos de la vida con alguien que padece TLP, requiere darnos cuenta y entender este tipo de trastorno y como incide en la salud mental de los individuos. Los acontecimientos cotidianos con personas que padecen TLP son poco claros y confusos, debido a que tienen modelos de pensamiento basados en procesos deficientes para asignar sentidos a sus experiencias vitales y que resultan en patrones de conducta alteradas. Cuando el TLP se halla fuertemente establecido dentro de sistemas familiares, sus miembros presentan importantes disfunciones de relación entre ellos. Es muy desconcertante observar a una persona que en lo externo es inteligente, capaz, frecuentemente exitosa ó que aparenta serlo pero que internamente se halla en crisis; muchos individuos afectados de TLP invierten una gran cantidad de energía emocional ocultando su trastorno, excepto al interior de sus relaciones de pareja ó familia, hasta que se derrumban y terminan asistiendo a terapias ó internados en un hospital.

Gender has a fundamental influence on the human brain, not only by virtue of biological and hormonal differences between the sexes but also because of the impact of gender-specific cultural, social, anthropological and environmental factors.
