Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444537244
Category : Science

Pages : 430

Book Description
Annotation The objective of the book is to provide an updated synthesis of the evolution of the Alpine fold belt hitherto not available in English. The overall concept is to build on classical Alpine geological studies made since the start of the 19thcentury by integrating this work with modern results obtained systematically on mid ocean ridges and passive margins worldwide over the past 50 years using new marine geological and geophysical technologies. The book thus provides an integrated overview of the evolution of the Alps from rift to passive margin to the present fold belt over a time span of 300my. * an integrated multidisciplinary synthesis of the evolution of the Alps from rift to passive margin to foldbelt. * 175 figures, structural maps and cross sections. * an index of localities referred to in the fext and figures. * a brief summary of the history and development of ideas concerning the evolution of fold belts and passive margins since the 19th century. * provides basis for further enquire and research * provides wider context relevant to marine and oil industry geoscientists.

Orogenic Processes in the Alpine Collision Zone

Orogenic Processes in the Alpine Collision Zone PDF Author: Nikolaus Froitzheim
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3764399503
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
This book covers a multitude of Alpine-type working areas and processes active in collisional mountain building in the form of 16 selected very up-to-date review and research articles covering the Alps, Carpathians and Dinarides. These data were presented at the 8th workshop on Alpine Geological Studies in Davos held in October 2007. The compilations and new data are of interest to earth scientists interested in mountain building in general and those interested in processes of continental collision in particular. The book is virtually indispensable for advanced students and scientists involved in Alpine studies.

Tectonic Aspects of the Alpine-Dinaride-Carpathian System

Tectonic Aspects of the Alpine-Dinaride-Carpathian System PDF Author: Siegfried Siegesmund
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862392526
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
The Alps, Carpathians and Dinarides form a complex, highly curved and strongly coupled orogenic system. Motions of the European and Adriatic plates gave birth to a number of 'oceans' and microplates that led to several distinct stages of collision. Although the Alps serve as a classical example of collisional orogens, it becomes clearer that substantial questions on their evolution can only be answered in the Carpathians and Dinarides. Our understanding of the geodynamic evolution of the Alpine-Dinaride-Carpathian System has substantially improved and will continue to develop; this is thanks to collaboration between eastern and western Europe, but also due to the application of new methods and the launch of research initiatives. The largely field-based contributions investigate the following subjects: pre-Alpine heritage and Alpine reactivation; Mesozoic palaeogeography and Alpine subduction and collision processes; extrusion tectonics from the Eastern Alps to the Carpathians and the Pannonian Basin; orogen-parallel and orogen-perpendicular extension; record of orogeny in foreland basins; tectonometamorphic evolution; and relations between the Alps, Apennines and Corsica.

Advances in Interpretation of Geological Processes

Advances in Interpretation of Geological Processes PDF Author: Maria Iole Spalla
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862392953
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
Iterative comparison of analytical results and natural observations with predictions of numerical models improves interpretation of geological processes. Further refinements derive from wide-angle comparison of results from various scales of study. In this volume, advances from field, laboratory and modelling approaches to tectonic evolution - from the lithosphere to the rock scale - are compared. Constructive use is made of apparently discrepant or non-consistent results from analytical or methodological approaches in processing field or laboratory data, P-T estimates, absolute or relative age determinations of tectonic events, tectonic unit size in crustal-scale deformation, grain-scale deformation processes, various modelling approaches, and numerical techniques. Advances in geodynamic modelling critically depend on new insights into grain- and subgrain-scale deformation processes. Conversely, quantitative models help to identify which rheological laws and pa-rameters exert the strongest control on multi-scale deformation up to lithosphere and upper mantle scale

Flood and Megaflood Processes and Deposits

Flood and Megaflood Processes and Deposits PDF Author: I. Peter Martini
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1444304305
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
The aim of this publication is the understanding of large floods and their impact on the Earth's surface. The major objectives are: 1) to take a second look at what constitutes a megaflood that the principle of uniformitarianism is at some loss to explain and 2) to try to determine what could happen in such large floods by analyzing those that occur in front of glaciers, in alluvial-fans and in alluvial valleys. The products of these floods are presented in terms of sedimentary deposits, erosional features and damage to human activities. The volume bears out the concept that sedimentological analysis can be a powerful tool, not only for reconstructing processes that have acted on ancient landscapes, but also as a technique for risk assessment of certain troubled areas. Therefore, this volume is of interest not only to sedimentologists/gemorphlogists, but also to engineers, landuse planners and anyone interested in the interrelation between humans and the environment.
