Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... THE TRUE SPIRIT. And he turned and rebuked them, and said: ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. Look, children, upon a map of Palestine, as it was when Jesus was on earth, and you will see that it contained three divisions, or provinces, namely: Gallilee on the North -- Samaria in the middle -- and Judea at the South., Between the inhabitants of Samaria and Judea there had existed, for centuries, such hatred that they had no dealings together, and they always treated each other with enmity and contempt. It would take more room than I have to spare, to tell you all the causes of their quarrel, and to point out to you all the places in the Bible where it is mentioned. It is enough for you to understand that no friendly feelings were to be found in the bosoms of the Jews towards the Samaritans, and that the Samaritans, on their side, had ho affection for the Jews. If you will remember this sad fact, you will be able to understand the incident in the life of Jesus to which I wish to refer. Jesus had been teaching in Gallilee. The time drew nigh when he was to he seized and put to death, and he set out with his disciples to go to Jerusalem. The shortest way was through Samaria. As they came near to a certain village, the inhabitants would not receive them, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. James and John, who were not yet free from Jewish prejudices, were indignant at the neglect their master received. They remembered how Elijah, a great prophet, once punished the Samaritans, * -- and thinking his example would be an excuse for them, they said; Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did ? But Jesus saw into their hearts -- understood their real...

The Glory Now Revealed

The Glory Now Revealed PDF Author: Andrew M. Davis
Publisher: Baker Books
ISBN: 1493430270
Category : Religion

Pages : 204

Book Description
Believers know that when we die we enter heaven and will spend eternity there with God and the saints who have gone before us. But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.

Category : Young Adult Fiction

Pages : 448

Book Description
Guy Fawkes’s son must join his father’s plot to kill the king in this magical retelling of the Gunpowder Plot that will sweep you back in time to a divided England where plagues turn victims to stone. In 17th-century London two forces rule the people: the color powers and the Stone Plague. Brown masks can manipulate wood. Black masks control the night. And red masks . . . Well, red is the color of blood. Thomas Fawkes’s Color Test is upon him, and he is sure his father, the infamous Guy Fawkes, will present him with a mask and Thomas will finally bond with a color. He desperately hopes for a gray mask so he can remove the stone that has invaded his body and will ultimately take his life. But when Guy refuses to give Thomas his mask or even his presence, Thomas has no place in school or society. His only hope is to track down his father and demand a mask to regain what he’s lost. But his father has other plans: to kill the king. Thomas must join forces with his father if he wants to save his own life. When his errands for the cause bring him time and again to Emma Areben, a former classmate, Thomas is exposed to a whole new brand of magic. And Emma doesn’t control just one color—she controls them all. Emma wants to show Thomas the full power of color magic, but it goes against everything his father is fighting for. If Thomas sides with his father, he could save his own life—which would destroy Emma and her family. To save one, he must sacrifice the other. No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.
