Julia Bonatti is alarmed by the astrological signs looming over Geneva Leary's wedding day, but nobody asked Julia's opinion and being a bridesmaid means supporting the bride no matter what. Even with the foreboding Moon-Mars-Pluto lineup in the heavens, no one's prepared for the catastrophes that strike: a no-show sister, a passed-out wedding planner, and a lethal shooting in the dead of night. With anger and grief threatening to tear the Leary family apart, Julia is determined to understand how such a terrible tragedy could have occurred. Murder and Madness

Murder and Madness PDF Author: Matthew Schoenbachler
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813173590
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 394

Book Description
The “Kentucky Tragedy” was early America’s best known true crime story. In 1825, Jereboam O. Beauchamp assassinated Kentucky attorney general Solomon P. Sharp. The murder, trial, conviction, and execution of the killer, as well as the suicide of his wife, Anna Cooke Beauchamp—fascinated Americans. The episode became the basis of dozens of novels and plays composed by some of the country’s most esteemed literary talents, among them Edgar Allan Poe and William Gilmore Simms. In Murder and Madness, Matthew G. Schoenbachler peels away two centuries of myth to provide a more accurate account of the murder. Schoenbachler also reveals how Jereboam and Anna Beauchamp shaped the meaning and memory of the event by manipulating romantic ideals at the heart of early American society. Concocting a story in which Solomon Sharp had seduced and abandoned Anna, the couple transformed a sordid murder—committed because the Beauchamps believed Sharp to be spreading a rumor that Anna had had an affair with a family slave—into a maudlin tale of feminine virtue assailed, honor asserted, and a young rebel’s revenge. Murder and Madness reveals the true story behind the murder and demonstrates enduring influence of Romanticism in early America.

Drew Peterson

Drew Peterson PDF Author: Chicago Tribune
Publisher: Agate Digital
ISBN: 1572844825
Category : True Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
A collection of Chicago Tribune articles detailing the case and trial of the infamous police officer convicted of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio. In 2004, Kathleen Savio, the third wife of Bolingbrook, Illinois, police officer Drew Peterson, was discovered dead in a bathtub from an apparent drowning. Her death was deemed accidental—at first. In 2007, following the disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, officials reopened the Savio case with Drew as the primary suspect. Drew Peterson: The Tribune Files is a true-crime ebook comprising actual Chicago Tribune articles. By compiling years of original reporting in chronological order, this book preserves the shock of each sordid twist in real time as the story grew from a local curiosity into a national phenomenon (complete with a made-for-TV Lifetime movie starring Rob Lowe). This book captures every detail of the murders and the surrounding media circus, from Peterson’s bizarre reality TV stint as a celebrity criminal, to the chilling courtroom testimony of Peterson’s brother as he unwittingly assisted with the disposal of a human body. Special attention is paid to the trial itself, which broke legal ground when hearsay testimony from Peterson’s fourth wife, recorded before her disappearance, was allowed as evidence. The Chicago Tribune’s award-winning staff possesses the unique perspective of having covered this case from beginning to end, and the most fascinating pieces have finally been curated into a single collection of the gruesome facts.

Hard-boiled Masculinities

Hard-boiled Masculinities PDF Author: Christopher Breu
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 9780816644346
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
The persona of the American male in the period between the two world wars was characterized by physical strength, emotional detachment, aggressive behavior, and an amoral worldview. This ideal of a hard-boiled masculinity can be seen in the pages and, even more vividly, on the covers of magazines such as Black Mask, which shifted from Victorian-influenced depictions of men in top hats and mustaches in the early 1920s to the portrayal of much more overtly violent and muscular men. Looking closely at this transformation, Christopher Breu offers a complex account of how and why hard-boiled masculinity emerged during an unsettled time of increased urbanization and tenuous peace and traces the changes in its cultural conception as it moved back and forth across the divide between high and low culture as well as the color line that bifurcated American society. Examining the work of Ernest Hemingway, Dashiell Hammett, Chester Himes, and William Faulkner, as well as many lesser-known writers for the hypermasculine pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, Breu illustrates how the tough male was a product of cultural fantasy, one that shored up gender and racial stereotypes as a way of lashing out at the destabilizing effects of capitalism and social transformation. Christopher Breu is assistant professor of English at Illinois State University.
