The New Engineering Research Centers PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309035988
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Within the past decade, six Engineering Research Centers opened on university campuses across the United States. This book reviews the lessons learned as the centers got under way, and examines the interrelationship among universities, government, industry, and the research establishment. Leaders from business, government, and universities discuss in this volume the challenges now facing American industry; the roots and early development of the research center concept; the criteria used in selecting the six centers; the structure and research agenda of each center; the projected impact of the centers on competitiveness of U.S. technology; and the potential for further research in biotechnology, electronics, robotics, and related areas.

Advanced Information Processing

Advanced Information Processing PDF Author: Heinz Schwärtzel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642934641
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 404

Book Description
During the last few years, computers have evolved from pure number crunching machines to "intelligent" problem solving tools. Increasing effort has been spent on the investigation of new approaches and the application of solutions to real world problems. In this way, exciting new techniques have evolved providing support for an increasing number of technical and economical aspects. Applications range from the design and development of ultra highly integrated circuits to totally new man-machine interfaces, from software engineering tools to fault diagnosis systems, from decision support to even the analysis of unemployment. Following a first joint workshop on Advanced Information Processing held in July 1988 at the Institute for Problems of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IPIAN) at Moscow, this was the second time that scientists and researchers from the USSR Academy of Sciences and Siemens AG, Corporate Research and Development, exchanged results and discussed recent advances in the field of applied computer sciences. Initiated by Prof. Dr. I. Mizin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Director of IPIAN, and Prof. Dr. H. Schwartzel, Vice President of the Siemens AG and Head of the Applied Computer Science & Software Department, a joint symposium was arranged at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow on June 5th and 6th 1990. The meetings on Information Processing and Software and Systems Design Automation provided a basis both for presentations of ongoing research and for discussions about specific problems.

Application of Evolutionary Algorithms for Multi-objective Optimization in VLSI and Embedded Systems

Application of Evolutionary Algorithms for Multi-objective Optimization in VLSI and Embedded Systems PDF Author: M.C. Bhuvaneswari
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 8132219589
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
This book describes how evolutionary algorithms (EA), including genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) can be utilized for solving multi-objective optimization problems in the area of embedded and VLSI system design. Many complex engineering optimization problems can be modelled as multi-objective formulations. This book provides an introduction to multi-objective optimization using meta-heuristic algorithms, GA and PSO and how they can be applied to problems like hardware/software partitioning in embedded systems, circuit partitioning in VLSI, design of operational amplifiers in analog VLSI, design space exploration in high-level synthesis, delay fault testing in VLSI testing and scheduling in heterogeneous distributed systems. It is shown how, in each case, the various aspects of the EA, namely its representation and operators like crossover, mutation, etc, can be separately formulated to solve these problems. This book is intended for design engineers and researchers in the field of VLSI and embedded system design. The book introduces the multi-objective GA and PSO in a simple and easily understandable way that will appeal to introductory readers.

Design Automation

Design Automation PDF Author: Michael Bushnell
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323148727
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 483

Book Description
Design Automation: Automated Full-Custom VLSI Layout Using the ULYSSES Design Environment deals with the use of the Ulysses design environment for an automated full-custom VLSI layout. Topics covered include VLSI chip design and design process, control mechanisms in Ulysses, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in design environments. An example design task is also presented. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of VLSI computer-aided design (CAD), focusing on an expert system based design environment aimed at solving the CAD tool integration problem. An example CAD tool suite for such an environment is presented. The next chapter describes prior attempts at developing an integrated design environment, followed by a discussion on the computer-aided VLSI design process that motivated the development of the Ulysses design environment. The following chapters explore the use of AI techniques within Ulysses; the fundamental architecture of Ulysses; and the control mechanisms that govern the decision to execute various CAD tools, on particular files, within Ulysses. The implementation of Ulysses is also discussed. The final chapter demonstrates the feasibility of a knowledge-based design environment for VLSI chip design applications; the success of Ulysses at further automating the VLSI design process; and the usability of Ulysses as a VLSI design environment. This monograph will be a valuable resource for systems designers and other practitioners in computer science and computer engineering.
