During 1962, the United States Air Force was activating new intercontinental ballistic missile systems (ICBMs) at bases around the United States, adding Atlas F. Titan I and II and Minuteman missiles to the already existing Atlas D and E ICBMs and the Thor, Jupiter, Matador and Mace missiles already on alert around the world. A number of the members of the Association of Air Force Missileers (AAFM) were involved with these missile systems, and many others were serving with BOMARC air defense missiles, Hound Dog air-launched missiles and other missile systems.
