Urban Stormwater Management in the United States

Urban Stormwater Management in the United States PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309125391
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 611

Book Description
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Air Traffic Control

Air Traffic Control PDF Author: Gerald L. Dillingham
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 9780756728052
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 74

Book Description
This report identifies potential scenarios for future air traffic controller attrition and the Federal Aviation Agency's (FAA) plans for dealing with such attrition. Because of the significant hiring in the early 1980s to replace strikers who had been fired, many thousands of FAA's controllers will soon become eligible to retire, potentially leaving FAA with too few fully trained controllers. This report: (1) identifies likely future attrition scenarios for FAA's controller workforce, and (2) examines FAA's strategy for responding to its short- and long-term staffing needs, including how it plans to address the challenges it may face. A Model of Strategic Human Capital Management PDF Author: David M. Walker
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 9780756725563
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 74

Book Description
Intended to help Federal agency leaders better manage their organizations' most important asset -- their people. Federal agencies that acquire, develop, and retain high performing employees with the appropriate skills and competencies are better able to respond to the needs of the public on a daily basis and in times of crisis. This model is designed to help agency leaders effectively use their people, or human capital, and determine how well they integrate human capital considerations into daily decision-making and planning. The model highlights the importance of a sustained commitment by agency leaders to maximize the value of their agencies' human capital and manage related risks.
