Composite Structures

Composite Structures PDF Author: I.H. Marshall
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 872

Book Description
The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.

Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions

Shock Wave-Boundary-Layer Interactions PDF Author: Holger Babinsky
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139498649
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Advanced Dynamics of Rolling Elements

Advanced Dynamics of Rolling Elements PDF Author: P.K. Gupta
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461252768
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
In any rotating machinery system, the bearing has traditionally been a crit ical member of the entire system, since it is the component that permits the relative motion between the stationary and moving parts. Depending on the application, a number of different bearing types have been used, such as oil-lubricated hydrodynamic bearings, gas bearings, magnetic suspensions, rolling element bearings, etc. Hydrodynamic bearings can provide any desired load support, but they are limited in stiffness and the associated power loss may be quite large. Gas bearings are used for high-precision applications where the supported loads are relatively light, bearing power losses are very low, and the rotating speeds generally high. For super precision components where no frictional dissipation or bearing power loss can be tolerated, magnetic suspensions are employed; again, the load support requirements are very low. Rolling element bearings have been widely used for those applications that require greater bearing versatility, due to the requirements for high-load and high-stiffness characteristics, while allowing moderate power loss and permitting variable speeds. A study of the dynamic interaction of rolling elements is, therefore, the subject of this text. Texts covering the analysis and design methodology of rolling elements are very limited. Notable works include Analysis of Stresses and Deflections (Jones, 1946, Vols. I and II), Ball and Roller Bearings, Their Theory, Design and Application (Eschmann, Hasbargen, and Weigand, 1958), Ball and Roller Bearing Engineering (Palmgren, 1959, 3rd ed. ), Advanced Bearing Technology (Bisson and Anderson, 1965), and Rolling Bearing Analysis (Harris, 1966).

Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity

Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity PDF Author: Grigorios Dimitriadis
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118756460
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 944

Book Description
Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity Introduces the latest developments and technologies in the area of nonlinear aeroelasticity Nonlinear aeroelasticity has become an increasingly popular research area in recent years. There have been many driving forces behind this development, increasingly flexible structures, nonlinear control laws, materials with nonlinear characteristics and so on. Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity covers the theoretical basics in nonlinear aeroelasticity and applies the theory to practical problems. As nonlinear aeroelasticity is a combined topic, necessitating expertise from different areas, the book introduces methodologies from a variety of disciplines such as nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis, unsteady aerodynamics, non-smooth systems and others. The emphasis throughout is on the practical application of the theories and methods, so as to enable the reader to apply their newly acquired knowledge Key features: Covers the major topics in nonlinear aeroelasticity, from the galloping of cables to supersonic panel flutter Discusses nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis, numerical continuation, unsteady aerodynamics and non-smooth systems Considers the practical application of the theories and methods Covers nonlinear dynamics, bifurcation analysis and numerical methods Accompanied by a website hosting Matlab code Introduction to Nonlinear Aeroelasticity is a comprehensive reference for researchers and workers in industry and is also a useful introduction to the subject for graduate and undergraduate students across engineering disciplines.

Extreme Events in Geospace

Extreme Events in Geospace PDF Author: Natalia Buzulukova
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128127015
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 800

Book Description
Extreme Events in Geospace: Origins, Predictability, and Consequences helps deepen the understanding, description, and forecasting of the complex and inter-related phenomena of extreme space weather events. Composed of chapters written by representatives from many different institutions and fields of space research, the book offers discussions ranging from definitions and historical knowledge to operational issues and methods of analysis. Given that extremes in ionizing radiation, ionospheric irregularities, and geomagnetically induced currents may have the potential to disrupt our technologies or pose danger to human health, it is increasingly important to synthesize the information available on not only those consequences but also the origins and predictability of such events. Extreme Events in Geospace: Origins, Predictability, and Consequences is a valuable source for providing the latest research for geophysicists and space weather scientists, as well as industries impacted by space weather events, including GNSS satellites and radio communication, power grids, aviation, and human spaceflight. The list of first/second authors includes M. Hapgood, N. Gopalswamy, K.D. Leka, G. Barnes, Yu. Yermolaev, P. Riley, S. Sharma, G. Lakhina, B. Tsurutani, C. Ngwira, A. Pulkkinen, J. Love, P.
