This book evaluates the history, the present and the future of water markets on 5 continents, beginning with the institutional underpinnings of water markets and factors influencing transaction costs. The book examines markets in seven countries and three different U.S. states, ranging from village-level water markets in Oman to basin wide formal water markets in Australia's Murray-Darling River basin. Introductory chapters on the background of water markets and on transaction costs and policy design are followed by chapter length discussion of water markets as an adaptive response to climate change and of supply reliability in a changing climate. Case studies describe a variety of facets of the design and function of markets around the world: California, Chile, Spain, Oman, Australia, Canada, India and China. In analyzing these real-world examples of markets, the contributors explore water rights and trading of rights between agricultural and urban sectors and the principles and function of option markets. They discuss different sized approaches, from large scale, ministry-level administration of markets to informal arrangements among farmers in the same village, or groups of villages which allocate water without large investment in management and infrastructure. Discussion includes questions of why water market practices have not expanded more rapidly in arid places. The book discusses mechanisms for resolving conflicts between water rights holders as well as between water right holders and third parties impacted by water trades and whether or not public ownership of water rights or use rights should trump private ownership and under what condition. Also covered are new and expanding categories of water use, beyond human consumption, agriculture and industry to new technologies ranging from extracting natural gas from shale to producing biofuels. Just as space, territory and society can be socially and politically co-constructed, so can water, and thus the construction of hydraulic infrastructures can be mobilised by politicians to consolidate their grip on power while nurturing their own vision of what the nation is or should become. This book delves into the complex and often hidden connection between water, technological advancement and the nation-state, addressing two major questions. First, the arguments deployed consider how water as a resource can be ideologically constructed, imagined and framed to create and reinforce a national identity, and secondly, how the idea of a nation-state can and is materially co-constituted out of the material infrastructure through which water is harnessed and channelled. The book consists of 13 theoretical and empirical interdisciplinary chapters covering four continents. El agua embotellada ha sido considerada históricamente como una fuente de salud por la población. Muchos fueron los efectos curativos o preventivos de enfermedades que, desde la publicidad, se le atribuyeron a lo largo del siglo xx. Sin embargo, en unos tiempos en los que los avances científicos han logrado la seguridad del abastecimiento domiciliario, la compra de agua en envase se presenta como uno de los mayores ejemplos de la sociedad del despilfarro. En la actualidad, las grandes cantidades de residuos que se generan a causa de su consumo masivo han convertido a esta bebida en un problema medioambiental de primer orden. Debido a la vinculación de este producto alimentario con el cambio climático y la generación de residuos, los poderes públicos han comenzado a realizar cambios en la legislación al objeto de frenar la cada vez mayor demanda entre la población. Por estos motivos, el presente trabajo de investigación pretende acercar al lector a los factores sociales e históricos que han conseguido instalar el consumo de agua embotellada en la mentalidad colectiva como una necesidad básica, así como las consecuencias que se derivan para el medio ambiente como resultado de esa creencia. Posteriormente, se analizará esta nueva tendencia legislativa que acaba de irrumpir en el panorama jurídico y que irá previsiblemente en aumento en el futuro. A tal efecto, se recopilarán y comentarán las medidas más destacables que se han adoptado en los últimos años con el propósito de desincentivar el consumo de esta bebida. De igual modo, se propondrán una serie de reformas sobre ciertos sectores del ordenamiento jurídico que deberían contribuir a que la ciudadanía vaya cambiando sus patrones de consumo, incentivando así la ingesta de agua de grifo.
