The Insiders’ Game

The Insiders’ Game PDF Author: Elizabeth N. Saunders
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691215812
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
"One of the most important virtues of a democracy is that its leaders are accountable to the public, which presumably makes democracies more cautious about using military force and, ultimately, more peaceful. Yet how, then, are some leaders able to continue or even escalate wars in the face of strong or rising popular opposition, as Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon did in the later stages of the Vietnam War, and Barack Obama did in Afghanistan? In this book, Saunders argues that constraints on democratic leaders' decisions about war come not from the public but from elites, making war an "insiders' game." Saunders sees elites as a disparate group that can shape not only the decision about whether to enter a war but also how wars unfold. The insiders' game can sometimes result in elites effectively colluding with leaders in escalating a war with dim prospects; it can also occasionally lead to de-escalation or the end of a conflict. Saunders focuses first on the importance of elite influence (rather than public accountability) and on how the preferences of elites differ from those of the public. She homes in on three main groups of elites that shape almost every war-related decision democratic leaders make: legislators, military leaders, and high-level bureaucrats and advisers. She then goes on to look at how these dynamics have played out historically, looking at the cases of Lebanon, Afghanistan, Korea, and Vietnam, showing that leaders' political bargaining with elites is key to understanding the use of force in American foreign policy"--

Can Traditional Chinese Medicines affect Endocrine Diseases via Effects on the Intestinal Flora?

Can Traditional Chinese Medicines affect Endocrine Diseases via Effects on the Intestinal Flora? PDF Author: Zhoujin Tan
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832544487
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Intestinal flora is a diversified and dynamic micro-ecosystem, whose structure and function have become a research hotspot in life sciences and medicine. The close relationship between intestinal flora and metabolic diseases has been verified by numerous studies. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is used for disease prevention and treatment within China and is attracting attention and receiving more and more recognition from other countries all over the world. Consequently, the interaction of the two hotspots deserves further investigation. Although TCM has been put into practice for thousands of years, the study of its specific mechanism of action and related targets for the treatment of endocrine diseases is still at an exploratory stage. For TCM with oral administration as the main usage, the key targets of their active ingredients may be inextricably linked to the decomposition and metabolic effects of certain intestinal bacterium. All these hypotheses need to be tested further.

Australian-Latin American Relations

Australian-Latin American Relations PDF Author: E. Kath
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137501928
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Until recently, Australia and Latin America were considered irrelevant to one another. The prevailing perception in Australia had been that Latin America was too remote, disconnected, and politically irrelevant to warrant serious scholarly or public attention. In recent years, this perception has rapidly changed, with Australian universities seeking to attract Latin American students, new diplomatic relations emerging, investment in mining and other business sectors expanding, and a growing fascination in Australia with Latin American food, music, dance and other forms of popular culture. These rapid developments can only properly be understood within the context of broader global transformations underway, including shifts in power relations between the 'Global North' and 'Global South', the rise of key Latin American economies, major technological developments, and ever-increasing global interconnectivity. This pioneering interdisciplinary book ventures into the new space of Australian-Latin American relations, exploring multiple dimensions of the rapidly changing landscape within a global context.
