Archaeology has become implicated in the Ayodhya controversy. It has been claimed that archaeological evidence provides irrefutable proof of the existence of a Rama Temple at the site of Babri Masjid, and of the destruction of this temple by Babur. The author uses standard archaeological procedures to question the claim. He examines the structural and artefactual evidence and analyses the stratigraphic information of B. B. Lal s excavations. Exploring possible alternative interpretations of the available data, he concludes that there was no temple of stone or brick lying below the mosque, and that there is no evidence of any act of destruction. The book is a defence of archaeology against its political misuse. A cautious examination of the archaeological evidence reveals a great deal about the working of communal politics. The archaeological discoveries which are supposed to prove the demolition of a Rama temple by Babur actually show no more than the logic of a politics which destroyed the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992.

Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), from the construction, maintenance, renovation and demolition of buildings and structures, represents a large proportion of the waste in industrialized societies. Compared to other forms, such as household waste, more than 90% of CDW can be used as a resource and a substitute for construction materials, especially for primary, natural raw materials. Reuse, recovery and recycling depends on the quality and market for the materials, and the environmental impact of the processes for conversion of CDW from old structures to its use in new structures. However, the utilization today of CDW products as secondary resources is marginal. Most CDW is deposited or used as fill material, and the opportunities of high quality recycling are generally neglected. This book presents the opportunities for the sustainable and resource efficient utilisation of CDW, focusing on recycling of concrete and masonry as the major forms of CDW. The recycling of gypsum, timber, mineral wool, asphalt and other types are also described. The purpose of fib Bulletin 47 is to provide the principles and procedures for designing concrete structures that integrate environmental aspects. It establishes general principles concerning the integration of environmental impacts in the design, construction, use, maintenance/ management, demolition, disposal and reuse after demolition of a concrete structure. Although the operation of buildings consumes the greatest energy through heating and cooling equipment, this is not covered in Bulletin 47, nor are the environmental impacts related to land use and general ecological systems. This report is applicable to both new and existing concrete structures.
