This book is based on the theory that the black Muslim movement was created from the knowledge of the Masonic order. In the early decades of the 20th century, noble drew ali established a political and religious organization known today as the Moorish Science Temple of America. This dissertation situates the mature expression of Prince Hall and his founding of black Freemasonry within northern emancipation, the rise of free black leadership, the spread of African-American religion, and the emergent tradition of public black writers. During the Revolutionary era New England decided against slavery; however, whites failed to accept people of color as citizens. In consequence, blacks, emancipated but not equal, traveled paths old and new, seeking residency and employment. Hall and his Masonic cohort organized themselves to lead this gathering throng. Black brethren, diverse in origin, affluence, and experience, blurred distinctions between resident and transient, patriot and emigrationist, and provincial and cosmopolite. By excavating black Freemasonry at the intersection of Beacon Hill street, in Boston, and the Atlantic world, this dissertation recovers previously obscure patterns of change. Hitherto underused Boston tax records illuminate, in original fashion, the relationship between mobility and the evolution of black community. Black Boston, like the African lodge, evolved at the juncture where the immediacy of local experience converged with black cosmopolitanism---a worldview formed by forced and free migration, eighteenth-century urbanity, and a deep concern for the African diaspora.
