Book Description
Is Africa calling you?! We teachers think about a lot of things in February, mostly Spring Break. But for me it's the time of year that I think about getting married. Only there's a small problem: I don't have a fiancee. And so for the past ten years I have spent February planning my summer trip overseas. . . to look for a wife. When school ends in May I'm off to some exotic corner of the planet returning the day before school starts in the fall. My hitchhiking treks have taken me around the world, sleeping under bridges, in train stations, and on park benches! But go I must, for the thought of spending a summer in Phoenix. . . alone. . . is totally unacceptable. And rather than wait for Ms. Right to find me, and go nuts in the meantime, I go out into the world to find her. This year's wife hunting safari will actually take me to the homeland of all safaris. . . Africa! Perfect plan, now I just need to find that cheap ticket.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
Jo Rust is one of the world's most prominent female adventurers. In 2011 she set out to become the first woman in history to circumnavigate the African continent on her own. No support. No back up vehicles. A story she shares in Woman Alone Around Africa - a tale of courage and overcoming the seemingly impossible. First Jo attempted to travel around Africa on her bicycle, she made it all the way to northern Angola, 3500 kilometers away from home, until her bicycle was stolen by 4 machete-wielding men. Then, in a miraculous turn of events the Angolan government steps in to become the main sponsor of Jo's journey as she starts all over again, this time on a motorcycle, even though she had never ridden a motorcycle before. Woman Alone Around Africa is about so much more than just an epic adventure. It's about the people in Jo's life who helped make her dream a reality and the life changing experiences had along the way. It's about having enough courage to do something even when you are afraid and overcoming crippling fear and a life-long battle against depression to achieve something extraordinary.

The Challenge for Africa

The Challenge for Africa PDF Author: Wangari Maathai
Publisher: Anchor
ISBN: 0307378098
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
In this groundbreaking work, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner and founder of the Green Belt Movement offers a new perspective on the troubles facing Africa today. Too often these challenges are portrayed by the media in extreme terms connoting poverty, dependence, and desperation. Wangari Maathai, the author of Unbowed, sees things differently, and here she argues for a moral revolution among Africans themselves. Illuminating the complex and dynamic nature of the continent, Maathai offers “hardheaded hope” and “realistic options” for change and improvement. She deftly describes what Africans can and need to do for themselves, stressing all the while responsibility and accountability. Impassioned and empathetic, The Challenge for Africa is a book of immense importance.

Leapfrogging Africa

Leapfrogging Africa PDF Author: Reiner Klingholz
Publisher: African Sun Media
ISBN: 1928314740
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
In this study, we look at the potential for development leaps in Africa in three key sectors that provided the basis for socioeconomic development around the world: health, education and agriculture. Advances in these sectors increase the human capital, create jobs and economic opportunities and have a positive influence on each other. Healthy and well-fed children can learn better; hygiene and better medical care diminish infant mortality, which reduces the desire for a large number of children; education for women promotes gender equality and causes birth rates to fall further. This creates a population structure under which the economy can grow particularly well: a demographic dividend becomes possible.

Reproduction and Social Organization in Sub-Saharan Africa

Reproduction and Social Organization in Sub-Saharan Africa PDF Author: Ron J. Lesthaeghe
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520372328
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 570

Book Description
Unlike most Asian and Latin American countries, sub-Saharan Africa has seen both an increase in population growth rates and a weakening of traditional patterns of child-spacing since the 1960s. It is tempting to conclude that sub-Saharan countries have simply not reached adequate levels of income, education, and urbanization for a fertility decline to occur. This book argues, however, that such a socioeconomic threshold hypothesis will not provide an adequate basis for comparison. These authors take the view that any reproductive regime is also anchored to a broader pattern of social organization, including the prevailing modes of production, rules of exchange, patterns of religious systems, kinship structure, division of labor, and gender roles. They link the characteristic features of the African reproductive regime with regard to nuptiality, polygyny, breastfeeding, postpartum abstinence, sterility, and child-fostering to other specifically African characteristics of social organization and culture. Substantial attention is paid to the heterogeneity that prevails among sub-Saharan societies and considerable use is made, therefore, of interethnic comparisons. As a result the book goes considerably beyond mere demographic description and builds bridges between demography and anthropology or sociology. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
