Pages : 223

Book Description
Affinities—that nagging sense of familiarity which we get at particular moments in works of art—offer a key to the ways in which poets and artists work. In nine chapters, this book approaches important aspects of the topic and shows how affinity, intentional or otherwise, can be a signpost to an influence the artist wishes to hide, a route into creativity, a shared feature of a genre at a particular stage of development, or a joyful sharing of a common heritage. It can also be the first step in a lawsuit, when it is confused with plagiarism. The chapters range in topic from Wagner and Meyerbeer, Tchaikovsky to the Hymnal, Thomas Mann and Colm Tóibín, and Agatha Christie and George Eliot to American Naïve Painting.

Of Wings and Wheels

Of Wings and Wheels PDF Author: Alice Wood

Pages : 269

Book Description
This study examines the physical form and cultic function of the biblical cherubim. Previous studies of the cherubim have placed too great an emphasis on archaeological and etymological data. This monograph presents a new synthetic study, which prioritises the evidence supplied by the biblical texts. Biblical exegesis, using literary and historical-critical methods, forms the large part of the investigation (Part I). The findings arising from the exegetical discussion provide the basis upon which comparison with etymological and archaeological data is made (Parts II and III). The results suggest that traditions envisaging the cherubim as tutelary winged quadrupeds, with one head and one set of wings, were supplanted by traditions that conceived of them as more enigmatic, obeisant beings. In the portrayal of the cherubim in Ezekiel and Chronicles, we can detect signs of a conceptual shift that prefigures the description of the cherubim in post-biblical texts, such as The Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice and the Enochic texts.

Semantics and Social Science (Routledge Revivlas)

Semantics and Social Science (Routledge Revivlas) PDF Author: Graham MacDonald
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136838619
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Originally published in 1980, this book examines the major issues in the philosophy of social science, paying specific attention to cross-cultural understanding, humanism versus scientism, individualism versus collectivism, and the shaping of theory by evaluative commitment. Arguing for a cross-cultural conception of human beings, the authors defend humanism and individualism, and reject the notion that social inquiry is necessarily vitiated by an adherence to values.

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon

Second Witness: Analytical and Contextual Commentary on the Book of Mormon PDF Author: Brant A. Gardner
Publisher: Greg Kofford Books
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 630

Book Description
Stop looking for the Book of Mormon in Mesoamerica and start looking for Mesoamerica in the Book of Mormon! Second Witness, a new six-volume series from Greg Kofford Books, takes a detailed, verse-by-verse look at the Book of Mormon. It marshals the best of modern scholarship and new insights into a consistent picture of the Book of Mormon as a historical document. Taking a faithful but scholarly approach to the text and reading it through the insights of linguistics, anthropology, and ethnohistory, the commentary approaches the text from a variety of perspectives: how it was created, how it relates to history and culture, and what religious insights it provides. The commentary accepts the best modern scholarship, which focuses on a particular region of Mesoamerica as the most plausible location for the Book of Mormon’s setting. For the first time, that location—its peoples, cultures, and historical trends—are used as the backdrop for reading the text. The historical background is not presented as proof, but rather as an explanatory context. The commentary does not forget Mormon’s purpose in writing. It discusses the doctrinal and theological aspects of the text and highlights the way in which Mormon created it to meet his goal of “convincing . . . the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.”
