Embellishing the Liturgy

Embellishing the Liturgy PDF Author: Alejandro Enrique Planchart
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351940724
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 439

Book Description
After the imposition of Gregorian chant upon most of Europe by the authority of the Carolingian kings and emperors in the eighth and ninth centuries, a large number of repertories arose in connection with the new chant and its liturgy. Of these repertories, the tropes, together with the sequences, represent the main creative activity of European musicians in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. Because they were not an absolutely official part of the liturgy, as was Gregorian chant, they reflect local traditions, particularly in terms of melody, and more so than the new pieces that were composed at the time. In addition, the earlier layers of tropes represent, in many cases, a survival of the pre local pre Gregorian melodic traditions. This volume provides an introduction to the study of tropes in the form of an extensive anthology of major studies and a comprehensive bibliography and constitutes a classic reference resource for the study of one of the most important musico-liturgical genres of the central middle ages.

That They be One

That They be One PDF Author: Michael Joseph Schuck
Publisher: Georgetown University Press
ISBN: 9780878404896
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
The social teaching of the Roman Catholic Church has aroused publicinterest in recent years with the increased involvement of North American bishops in matters of civic morality, with the growth of liberation theology in Central and South America, and with the ongoing political and economic statements of Pope John Paul II. A vital ingredient of Roman Catholic social teaching is the papal encyclical literature. Debate grows, however, over exactly what the papal letters teach. Noteworthy encyclical commentaries exist, but none has attempted a comprehensive historical analysis of the complete content and overall coherence of Roman Catholic encyclical social teaching. This book, appearing in advance of the 1991 centennial of "Rerum novarum", provides the kind of analysis that concerned Roman Catholics, public officials, social ethicists, theologians and students are looking for: a textually inclusive and topically broad-gauged study of Catholic social teaching in its historical development with a forthright assessment of the teaching's contradictions and consistencies.

Readings in Church Authority

Readings in Church Authority PDF Author: Richard Gaillardetz
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351906437
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 756

Book Description
The issues of Authority and Governance in the Roman Catholic Church permeate each and every aspect of the Church's identity, teaching, influence, organisation, moral values and pastoral provision. They have left their mark, in turn, upon its diverse theological and philosophical traditions. The trends of postmodernity, advances in communication, the advent of new ecclesial movements and theologies, and a perceived policy towards increasing institutional centralisation on the part of the Curial authorities of the Church in Rome, have all facilitated a continuous and lively stream of dialogue and disagreement on authority and governance in relation to the place of the Church in our age and the new Millennium. This comprehensive Reader uniquely gathers together in one volume key writings and documents from the wealth of published literature that has emerged on the issues of authority and governance in the Roman Catholic Church. With guided introductions to each section and to each reading, and end of chapter further reading lists, this Reader offers a balanced range of perspectives, themes, international writings, ecumenical dimensions, and formal church documents and Papal pronouncements on core areas of contemporary study and debate. Focusing on the modern/post-modern period in the Roman Catholic Church, but grounded in the historical contexts, Readings in Church Authority presents an accessible source book and introduction for all those exploring current debates and studying central themes in church authority.

The Limits of a Divided Nation with Perspectives from the Bible

The Limits of a Divided Nation with Perspectives from the Bible PDF Author: Michael Ufok Udoekpo
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725256118
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
Michael Udoekpo’s work brilliantly and pastorally discusses the issues of conflict, friction, and disunity in the world—and in Nigeria in particular—from biblical, historical, and sociocultural perspectives. These issues, he stresses, are endemic in various fabrics of the Nigerian society, traceable to the family as the foundation of any given society. They are also found in religious, political, and media groups. Contributing factors, Udoekpo argues, are materialism, infidelity, relativism, and fundamentalism. Others are ethnocentrism, anthropocentricism, ignorance, bribery, and corruption with other forms of injustices. Drawing from the Bible, Udoekpo proposes prayer, proper education, truth-telling, restoration of family values, interreligious and cultural dialogue, ecumenism, enforcement of rule of law, faith, and absolute trust in God as antidotes to conflict, violence, friction, and disunity in our contemporary society.
