Reach for the Skies

Reach for the Skies PDF Author: Richard Branson
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 1101514213
Category : Transportation

Pages : 352

Book Description
One of the world's most famous business leaders (and a well-known avian fanatic) explores the pioneers of flight. Bestselling author and billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson has always been obsessed with the skies. To promote a new Virgin Airlines route, he became the first man to water ski behind a blimp. His Virgin Galactic venture will soon offer ordinary people the opportunity to experience spaceflight aboard the first commercial spaceliner, SpaceShipTwo. In Reach for the Skies, Branson examines the history of aviation over the last two hundred years, putting the spotlight on trailblazers such as: *Tony Jannus, who made the first ever commercial flight over Tampa Bay, Florida, in 1914. *Leo Valentin, the "bird man" who jumped from 9,000 feet wearing a pair of wooden wings in the 1950s. *Steve Fossett, who broke 130 world records in planes, balloons, and airships. The pioneers of flight-not just the world-famous Wright Brothers, but also lesser known visionaries and dreamers-made it possible for any of us with the desire and the commitment to reach for the skies ourselves.

The Pre-astronauts

The Pre-astronauts PDF Author: Craig Ryan
Publisher: US Naval Institute Press
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Back in the 1950s and early 1960s, before liquid-fuel rockets had launched us full-sail onto what John Kennedy would call the "new ocean", a small fraternity of daring, brilliant men made the first exploratory trips into the upper stratosphere to the edge of outer space in tiny capsules suspended beneath plastic balloons. They saw things no one had ever seen, and they experienced conditions no one was sure they could survive. This book tells the story of these brave and tenacious men as they labored on the cusp of a new age. The author captures the drama of their spectacular achievements and those of many of the other space pioneers who made America's stratospheric balloon programs possible. Their now largely forgotten programs supplied many systems and processes adopted by NASA. Unfortunately, some of the valuable lessons they brought back from the edge of space were ignored - in at least one case, with disastrous consequences. Craig Ryan's argument is compelling for the inclusion of these men's achievements in the broad history of space exploration and astronautics. In their day, before Gagarin and Glenn and American flags on the Sea of Tranquillity, these pre-astronauts were the space program.

Cartographic Fictions

Cartographic Fictions PDF Author: Karen Lynnea Piper
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 9780813530734
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
Maps are stories as much about us as about the landscape. They reveal changing perceptions of the natural world, as well as conflicts over the acquisition of territories. Cartographic Fictions looks at maps in relation to journals, correspondence, advertisements, and novels by authors such as Joseph Conrad and Michael Ondaatje. In her innovative study, Karen Piper follows the history of cartography through three stages: the establishment of the prime meridian, the development of aerial photography, and the emergence of satellite and computer mapping. Piper follows the cartographer's impulse to "leave the ground" as the desire to escape the racialized or gendered subject. With the distance that the aerial view provided, maps could then be produced "objectively," that is, devoid of "problematic" native interference. Piper attempts to bring back the dialogue of the "native informant," demonstrating how maps have historically constructed or betrayed anxieties about race. The book also attempts to bring back key areas of contact to the map between explorer/native and masculine/feminine definitions of space.

Book Description
When JJ joins the military, he hopes that his commitment will help him gain a better perspective. Before he knows it he deploys to the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unfortunately, life in a conflict zone makes no sense to him. Given his circumstances, JJ does not concern himself with the occupational hazards or army standards. He's only fascinated with the absurd language that bombards him daily. As he attempts to understand the chaotic world around him, JJ takes a shot at deciphering the bureaucratic dialogue that disguises the truth. As JJ journeys from a confused young man to one who becomes enlightened, he must battle a true enemy that leads him to discover that nothing is ever guaranteed when it comes to war. In this modern military tale, an American soldier encounters pandemonium over ambiguous bureaucratic dialogue amid the chaos of the Iraq War.
