Book Description
Excerpt from Adventures in Morocco and Journeys Through the Oases of Draa and Tafilet In Algeria are strips and patches of wilderness, and the corn-growing region is distinguished by a peculiar appellation The Tell. In Morocco, as our author remarks, that word is not in use, since the whole country is fit for the plough. Yet, though it cannot be doubted that of all the pro vinces of Northern Africa or Barbary, Morocco is the most spacious, the most fertile, the most healthy and agreeable in climate, it is also the most barbarous. As Mecca among cities, so is Morocco among kingdoms. Sometimes the Sultan or Emperor may give an escort to a traveller, as for instance when Hooker ascended the Atlas. The seaports, Mogador and Tangiers, are Open to the world; and the Jews, being useful as traders. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Tafilet

Tafilet PDF Author: Walter Harris
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Atlas Mountains
Languages : en
Pages : 430

Book Description
First published in 1895, this book recounts the author's 1893 expedition to the Tafilet oasis in Morocco, one of the largest oases in the world. Previously largely inaccessible (before the invention of the motor car it was at least 10 days' journey south of Fez across the Atlas mountains and the Sahara), Harris took advantage of the Sultan of Morocco Mulai el Hassen's decision to pay a visit to the oasis during the autumn of that year. Throughout the book the author describes in great detail the places he visited and the people he met along the way. There are detailed descriptions of Marrakesh and the villages of the Atlas Mountains, as well as ruminations on the differences between the Arabs and the Berber tribes, and the situation of the Jews. Crossing the desert, Harris reached the Sultan's camp at the edge of the oasis, and there follows a detailed description of the activities of the Sultan and his retinue, their dealings with the troublesome tribes of the area, and accounts of the history, geography and people of Tafilet. The book concludes with the author's return journey to the north, and an account of the events following the Sultan's own return from the oasis and his subsequent death. Painting as it does a vivid picture of the state of Morocco at the very end of the 19th century, Walter B. Harris's Tafilet is sure to be of great interest to all those fascinated by the history of this unique and diverse North African country.

The Chaldean Account of Genesis

The Chaldean Account of Genesis PDF Author: George Smith

Book Description
In this early work of Assyriology, Smith provides his analysis of the Gilgamesh Epic as well as Enuma Elish in their relation to the Old Testament. Five years after his death, the renowned Assyriologists, A. H. Sayce revised and updated his work. The stories and myths given in the foregoing pages have, probably, very different values; some are genuine traditions--some compiled to account for natural phenomena, and some pure romances. At the head of their history and traditions the Babylonians placed an account of the creation of the world; and, although different forms of this story were current, in certain features they all agreed. Beside the account of the present animals, they related the creation of legions of monster forms which disappeared before the human epoch, and they accounted for the great problem of humanity--the presence of evil in the world--by making out that it proceeded from the original chaos, the spirit of confusion and darkness, which was the origin of all things, and which was even older than the gods. --from the Conclusion

British Goblins PDF Author: Wirt Sikes

ISBN: 1365619664
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
British Goblins - Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions. British Goblins does a good job at its stated purpose - collecting and loosely categorizing Welsh Folklore of every category, ranging from the reasons behind certain customs and superstitions of daily life, to descriptions and associated stories of various faeries, goblins, and giants, to descriptions of apparitions and the view of the afterlife, to more fantastic things, like dragons, standing stones, and magic wells and stones. Although a somewhat anecdotal approach is taken, the author has in fact preserved a good deal of information that might have otherwise been lost.
