Book Description
Advances in Surface Treatments provides information on technologies, applications, and effects of surface treatment processes on different materials. The text is composed of papers that are presented at the AST World Conference, ""Advances in Surface Treatments and Surface Finishing"", held in Paris in December 1986. The book is divided into six parts; each of which discusses a different topic in the field of surface treatment. These topics include thermal and thermochemical surface treatments; mechanical surface treatments and their effects; quality control of surface treated materials; surface finishing; surface coating; laser surface of hardening materials; and the relationship of surface treatment with the environment. Topics such as metallic coatings and special surface treatments are also covered in the book. The text is recommended for engineers who are not yet familiar with surface treatments as well as those who wish to contribute to the research in this field.

Book Description
Surface Treatment in Bonding Technology provides valuable advice on surface treatment methods, modern measuring devices, and the appropriate experimentation techniques that are essential to create strong joints with a reliable service life. The book's focus is on the detailed and up-to-date analysis of surface treatment methods for metallic and polymer substrates. An analysis of factors affecting the surface preparation stage, together with advice on selection, is also provided. Essential theory is combined with experimentation techniques and industry practice to provide a guide that is both practical and academically rigorous. Including a general introduction to bonding, as well as coverage of mechanical, chemical and electrochemical methods, this book is the ideal primer for anyone working with or researching adhesive bonding. - Provides detailed descriptions of surface treatments and their mechanisms that will help readers build a deep understanding of these fundamental techniques - Includes a thorough survey of recent advances in research in surface treatments of metals and polymers - Provides technical advice on experimental testing methods throughout the book

Advanced Surface Coatings: a Handbook of Surface Engineering

Advanced Surface Coatings: a Handbook of Surface Engineering PDF Author: A. Matthews
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9789401053525
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The past decade has seen a rapid development in the range of techniques which are available to modify the surfaces of engineering components. This in tum has led to the emergence of the new field of surface engineering the design of a composite system (coating plus substrate) that produces a performance which cannot be achieved by either the coating or substrate alone. With this expansion comes the problem of deciding on the correct surfacing technology for a given application. Clearly, to take full advantage of the benefits which surface engineering offers, there is a need to explain, in a structured way, the basic features and interrelationships of the most recently developed coatings and treatments. Advanced Surface Coatings satisfies this need by providing a concise and authoritative state-of-the art review of surface engineering. In chapter 1 the reader is provided with an insight into the surfacing technology appropriate for a given function. Chapter 2 reviews the principles of plasma generation (a theme which is central to many of the advanced surface treatments and coatings) and forms a solid foundation for the chap ters which follow. Chapters 3 to 10 each discuss the general principles on which the technology is based, followed by an appreciation of specific properties and application areas for materials treated by each particular method. These chapters cover ion implantation, ion-assisted coatings, evaporation, sputtering, physical vapour deposition, chemical vapour deposi tion, thermal spraying, and laser treatments.

Progress in Surface Treatment

Progress in Surface Treatment PDF Author: Nahed El Mahallawy

Book Description
Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters BCI (WoS). All components and mechanical parts have surfaces which are either exposed to a particular environment or are in contact with other components. Consequent corrosion and/or wear of the surface may then lead to destructive failure. A so-called “bad” surface is a favoured spot for crack initiation, resulting in a decrease in the fatigue, tensile properties and even toughness of materials. Although the development of new materials can improve the surface properties, this can also lead to a change in the properties of the substrate. For example, increasing the carbon content significantly improves the wear resistance of steels, but toughness has to be sacrificed. Increased cost is another major concern. Moreover, for some components, such as gears, a ductile substrate and a hard surface are required. In this case, surface treatment remains the only choice. Surface modification, also termed surface treatment, has thus been recognised as being a major emergent manufacturing technology for improving the surface properties, with minimal alteration of the substrate.
