Book Description
The aim of this Advanced Study Institute was to give an account on the most recent results obtained in solar research. Bucharest was chosen to host it, because the capital city of Romania was located right in the middle of the totality path of the last eclipse of the millennium, on 11th August 1999; furthermore the phenomenon was close to reach there its longest duration: 2m 23s. Such a total eclipse is not only a very spectacular event which draws the crowds: to astronomers, solar eclipses still offer the best conditions for observing the lower part of the corona. The Sun plays a crucial role in our very existence. It was responsible for the formation of the Earth, and rendered this planet fit to host living beings, providing the right amount of heat, and this for a long enough span of time. Quite understandably, it has always been a prime target of human curiosity, and more recently one of scientific investigation. During the last century, it was realized that the Sun is a star like billions of others; we learned since that it draws its energy from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen, and we are now able to estimate its age and life expectancy.

Sun Moon Earth

Sun Moon Earth PDF Author: Tyler Nordgren
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 0465096468
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
With beautiful illustrations and a detailed map, Sun Moon Earth has everything you need to get ready for the next solar eclipse. On April 8, 2024, millions of Americans will experience an awe-inspiring phenomenon: a total eclipse of the sun. In Sun Moon Earth, astronomer Tyler Nordgren illustrates how this most seemingly unnatural of natural phenomena was transformed from a fearsome omen to a tourist attraction. From the astrologers of ancient China and Babylon to the high priests of the Maya, Sun Moon Earth takes us around the world to show how different cultures interpreted these dramatic events. Greek philosophers discovered eclipses' cause and used them to measure their world and the cosmos beyond. Victorian-era scientists mounted eclipse expeditions during the age of globe-spanning empires. And modern-day physicists continue to use eclipses to confirm Einstein's theory of relativity. Beautifully illustrated and lyrically written, Sun Moon Earth is the ideal guide for all eclipse watchers and star gazers alike.

Solar and Space Physics

Solar and Space Physics PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309313953
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 37

Book Description
In 2010, NASA and the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assemble a committee of experts to develop an integrated national strategy that would guide agency investments in solar and space physics for the years 2013-2022. That strategy, the result of nearly 2 years of effort by the survey committee, which worked with more than 100 scientists and engineers on eight supporting study panels, is presented in the 2013 publication, Solar and Space Physics: A Science for a Technological Society. This booklet, designed to be accessible to a broader audience of policymakers and the interested public, summarizes the content of that report.

Progress Toward Implementation of the 2013 Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics

Progress Toward Implementation of the 2013 Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics PDF Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309671302
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 191

Book Description
The 2013 report Solar and Space Physics; A Science for a Technological Society outlined a program of basic and applied research for the period 2013-2022. This publication describes the most significant scientific discoveries, technical advances, and relevant programmatic changes in solar and space physics since the publication of that decadal survey. Progress Toward Implementation of the 2013 Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics assesses the degree to which the programs of the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration address the strategies, goals, and priorities outlined in the 2013 decadal survey, and the progress that has been made in meeting those goals. This report additionally considers steps to enhance career opportunities in solar and space physics and recommends actions that should be undertaken to prepare for the next decadal survey.

Alternatives for Military Space Radar

Alternatives for Military Space Radar PDF Author: Joseph A. Post
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Astronautics, Military
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
"DoD's 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review calls for investment in such systems to grow in order to provide 'a highly persistent capability to identify and track moving ground targets in denied areas.' To that end, DoD and the National Reconnaissance Office are proposing to develop a constellation of Earth-orbiting Space Radar satellites that would provide imagery, GMTI, and geospatial intelligence products to members of the military and the intelligence community. This Congressional Budget Office (CBO) study--prepared at the request of Senators Wayne Allard and Bill Nelson in their respective capacities as the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services' Subcommittee on Strategic Forces--examines the costs and potential performance of four possible designs for a Space Radar system."--Preface.
