Analytical Methods for Coal and Coal Products

Analytical Methods for Coal and Coal Products PDF Author: Clarence Karr
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483273164
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 686

Book Description
Analytical Methods for Coal and Coal Products, Volume II, aims to provide a detailed presentation of what constitutes the first comprehensive reference work devoted exclusively to the subject of analytical methodology for coal and coal products. The various chapters have been arranged according to either a specific coal process or a specific coal use problem. The topics discussed include the structure of coal and coal products, minerals in coal, coal carbonization products, and coal combustion products. The general philosophy of this work is to strike a balance between sophisticated analyses based on expensive instrumentation such as mass or nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, and the more common, less expensive equipment typically employed in the standard methods. Likewise there is an attempt to strike a balance between the expertise available from within the United States and that found in other countries, offering a broader viewpoint. Altogether, a large number of cross references have been entered in these chapters to enable the reader to make maximum use of pertinent information in all of the chapters.

Sedimentary Organic Matter

Sedimentary Organic Matter PDF Author: R. Tyson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401107394
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 634

Book Description
A sound understanding of the global carbon cycle requires an appreciation of the various physico-chemical and biological processes that determine the production, distribution, deposition and diagenesis of organic matter in the natural environment. This book is a comprehensive interdisciplinary synthesis of this information, coupled with an organic facies approach based on data from both microscopy and bulk organic geochemistry.

Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins

Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins PDF Author: Nancy D. Naeser
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461234921
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 555

Book Description
The collection of papers in this volume is a direct result of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists Research Symposium on "Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins: Methods and Case Histories" held as part of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Convention in New Orleans in March 1985. The original goal of the sym posium was to provide a forum where specialists from a variety of dis ciplines could present their views of methods that can be used to study the thermal history of a sedimentary basin or an important portion of a basin. An explicit part of that goal was to illustrate each method by presentation of a case history application. The original goal is addressed by the chapters in this volume, each of which emphasizes a somewhat different approach and gives field data in one way or another to illustrate the practical useful ness ofthe method. The significance of our relative ignorance of the thermal conductivities of sedimentary rocks, especially shales, in efforts to understand or model sedimentary basin thermal histories and maturation levels is a major thrust of the chapter by Blackwell and Steele. Creaney focuses on variations in kerogen composition in source rocks of different depositional environments and the degree to which these chem- . ically distinct kerogens respond differently to progressive burial heating.

Echoes of Life

Echoes of Life PDF Author: Susan M. Gaines
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195176197
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
In 1936 a German chemist identified certain organic molecules that he had extracted from ancient rocks and oils as the fossil remains of chlorophyll--presumably from plants that had lived and died millions of years in the past. It was another twenty-five years before this insight was developed and the term "biomarker" coined to describe fossil molecules whose molecular structures could reveal the presence of otherwise elusive organisms and processes.Echoes of Life is the story of these molecules and how they are illuminating the history of the earth and its life. It is also the story of how a few maverick organic chemists and geologists defied the dictates of their disciplines and--at a time when the natural sciences were fragmenting into ever-more-specialized sub-disciplines--reunited chemistry, biology and geology in a common endeavor. The rare combination of rigorous science and literary style--woven into a historic narrative that moves naturally from the simple to the complex--make Echoes of Life a book to be read for pleasure and contemplation, as well as education.

Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production

Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production PDF Author: Harry Dembicki
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323959237
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production, Second Edition provides readers with a single reference that addresses the principle concepts and applications of petroleum geochemistry used in finding, evaluating, and producing petroleum deposits. The revised volume includes a new chapter on environmental forensic applications of petroleum geochemistry. With the current emphasis on environmental issues (pollution, climate changes, and corporate responsibility), information about how petroleum geochemistry can be used to recognize these problems, determine their source, help identify who is responsible, and how these problems may be mitigated are vital to efficient and economical operation of a project from exploration to production to abandonment. Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production, Second Edition will continue to serve as a foundational reference to understanding the underpinning of the science, as well as a source of references that the reader can use to find detailed descriptions of methods and protocols. - Emphasizes the practical application of geochemistry in solving exploration and production problems - Features more than 200 illustrations, tables, diagrams, and case studies to underscore key concepts - Authored by an expert geochemist with over 40 years of experience in field-based research, applications, and instruction - New edition includes a chapter on environmental issues (impact, climate change, pollution, and corporate responsibility), as well as expanded coverage of topics such as hydrates as unconventional resources; geomicrobial methods (especially DNA analysis) and the use of sea surface slicks from seafloor seeps in surface geochemistry; using GC x GC and asphaltene FTIR in oil correlation studies; and interpretation isotope data for the maturity of thermogenic natural gas
