Book Description
EUCAMBIS was established under BIOMED I in 1994 as an interdisciplinary consortium aiming to advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of ageing of immunosenescence. The project sought to draw together scientists and clinicians from diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology, cell and tumour biology, geriatrics, endocrinology and transplantation biology in order to investigate the impact of ageing on immune responses. The papers collected in this volume illustrate the diversity of the work carried out by the members of EUCAMBIS during its three-and-a-half year existence. This introductory chapter attempts to summarize the results of some of the EUCAMBIS collaborations, with emphasis on the "workshop" approach which was aimed at analysing the expression of "growth arrest" genes in ageing human T lymphocytes.

The Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (Batten Disease)
Author: Hans H. Goebel
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051994810
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
The European Concerted Action on the "Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCL)", probably the most frequent group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders in children, has been the subject of a 3-year European Concerted Action (ECA-"NCL"), within the Biomed 2 programme, listed among "Rare diseases". The NCL are a lysosomal disease which have recently been confirmed by important genetic studies on the NCL which revealed a diversity of at least 8 gene loci related to this group of diseases. ECA-"NCL" represents a multi-national, multi-disciplinary network of researchers on the NCL which have provided new data on this group of diseases. In this book, clinical features, neuroradiological and electrophysiological data, morphological aspects, genetic data and biochemical results will be provided by actively engaged researchers on NCL from this Concerted Action, who have also provided major presentations at the two recent International Congresses of NCL: 1996 in Helsinki (NCL-96) and 1998 in Dallas (NCL-98). Thus, this book represents a state of the art written both for active researchers on NCL and other lysosomal and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as for those interested in NCL for other reasons, foremost patients (and their parents). Tables, illustrations, and most recent references will accomplish the text produced and edited by an editorial board consisting of participants of this ECA-"NCL". At the end of this state-of-the-art presentation, future lines of research - including therapies - will be outlined and emphasized what will have to be done to arrive at complete elucidation of this group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders.

Biomembrane Structures
Author: Parvez I. Haris
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051993233
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
Biological membranes play a significant role in a range of biological processes such as ion-transport and signal transduction. Over the years much effort has been devoted towards developing an understanding of biomembrane structure. The study of this subject is now reaching an important stage. This is because at last the full three-dimensional structure of certain membrane proteins is beginning to be resolved. In the past three-dimensional structures of membrane proteins were difficult to obtain as only two dimensional crystals were available. In recent years satisfactory crystals have been obtained and X-ray diffraction techniques have been applied. This has led to the three dimensional structures of the photosynthetic reaction centres, porins and more recently the structure of cytochrome oxidase. Of course not all membrane proteins are readily crystallisable and some are not even available in sufficient quantities to obtain the necessary crystals or to carry out biophysical experiments. In some cases e.g. the voltage-gated potassium ion channel membrane proteins their structure has been proposed mainly on the basis of molecular biology methods. This has prompted the search for alternative approaches for characterising biomembrane structure. Molecular biological studies are providing a wealth of information on a number of different membrane proteins. Combining the information derived from such studies with molecular modelling is becoming extremely useful for relating structure to function. Development of other approaches include synthesis and structure- function analysis of peptides corresponding to functionally important domains of membrane proteins. This book presents a series of Chapters discussing how a combination of molecular biological, biophysical and theoretical (molecular modelling) techniques are helping us to obtain a much clearer picture of biomembrane structure. After an introductory Chapter on the Principles of membrane Protein Structure, the book is divided into two sections; one dealing with crystallographic approaches and the other non-crystallographic approaches such as NMR, AFM, SPR and FTIR spectroscopy. Chapters dealing with the recently solved crystal structure of cytochrome oxidase and bacteriorhodopsin are presented. The book contains contributions from leading membrane scientists describing their latest studies. It provides an up to date coverage of the developments in the field of biomembranes with particular emphasis on membrane proteins.

Proteolysis in Cell Functions
Author: Väinö K. Hopsu-Havu
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051993226
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 594
Book Description
The proteolytic enzymes have an essential function in all cells. Their activities are regulated by the rate of synthesis, activation of proenzymes and by the rate of synthesis of their inhibitors. They are synthesized in ribosomes like any other proteins and transported to various storage organelles or secreted from the cells and are activated in the pericellular space or in interstitium. Various cells and tissues have their characteristic enzyme patterns which serve their specific functions. Proteolytic enzymes take part and often have a regulatory role in numerous phases of cell function, e.g. cell division, migration, apoptotic as well as necrotic cell death etc. Diseases in which proteolysis has been subject of active research are e.g. cancer metastasis, viral infections, e.g. HIV, and Alzheimer's disease. They are also an essential part in any tissue remodelling, wound healing, throughout the kingdom of fauna and flora.

EURO-QUAL
Author: Bastiaan J. Njio
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 9789051994780
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 112
Book Description
The benefits for the professional working within a quality culture are manifold, but even more important, the patient is the final arbiter of quality care. Therefore patient centred aspects of treatment are focused upon in this manual. A quality manual intended for European use has to respect the national regulations and European diversity, and therefore needs to be flexible. The EOQM has been structured according to the treatment of the individual patient, which is what all professionals have in common, and which also is the most important target for quality improvement in orthodontic practice. The EOQM is primarily designed as a stimulus for the orthodontic professional to assess and improve the quality of orthodontic care. A Quality Improvement System (QIS) provides support for starting and maintaining activities. The manual provides tools to systematically assess and develop quality-related actions at individual (patient) treatment level and practice level. A systematic and comprehensive description of the treatment process is essential in order to provide a basis for establishing a QIS. Implementing a QIS will influence the provision of orthodontic care by: * Demonstrating the potentials for development of the organisational elements of orthodontics. * Planning and integrating systematic activities to monitor and improve treatment at the practice level and the patient-related level. Orthodontic treatment process is the central element in this manual. The route taken by an individual patient is described step by step. * Flowcharts describe the orthodontic treatment of the individual patient step by step. * Guidelines indicate what the professional should do at the various steps in order to follow the generally accepted objectives of orthodontics as described in the policy statements. * Indicators are tools to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment. The indicators provide the professional with facts about own performance. The EOQM, provides the orthodontic professional with a model for incorporating quality improvement into daily practice, which is based on European orthodontic consensus and current principles of quality in health care. It can be incorporated in the quality initiatives that are already being developed nationally and vice versa.
