Handbook on Biodegradation and Biological Treatment of Hazardous Organic Compounds

Handbook on Biodegradation and Biological Treatment of Hazardous Organic Compounds PDF Author: M.H. van Agteren
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401590621
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 463

Book Description
The introduction of synthetic organic chemicals into the environment during the last few decades has given rise to major concern about the ecotoxicological effects and ultimate fate of these compounds. The pollutants that are considered to be most hazardous because of their intrinsic toxicity, high exposure level, or recalcitrant behavior in the environment have been placed on blacklists and other policy priority lists. The fate of synthetic compounds that enter the environment is mainly determined by their rate of biodegradation, which therefore also has a major effect on the degree of bioaccumulation and the risk of ecotoxicological effects. The degree and rate of biodegradation is also of critical importance for the feasibility of biological techniques to clean up contaminated sites and waste streams. The biodegradation of xenobiotics has thus been the subject of numerous studies, which resulted in thousands of publications in scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings. These studies led to a deeper understanding of the diversity of biodegradation processes. As a result, it has become possible to enhance the rate of degradation of recalcitrant pollutants during biological treatment and to design completely new treatment processes. At present, much work is being done to expand the range of pollutants to which biodegradation can be applied, and to make treatment techniques less expensive and better applicable for waste streams which are difficult to handle.

Bioremediation

Bioremediation PDF Author: Mohammed Kuddus
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781536135541
Category : Bioremediation
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Due to increased urbanization and industrialization, various types of waste materials are produced, in which most of them are classified as hazardous. Many of these hazardous compounds are triggering environmental pollution and act as threats to public health. The conventional treatment methods have many drawbacks. However, bioremediation is the process of biodegradation in which biological means are used to degrade harmful materials under controlled conditions. Bioremediation could provide an efficient solution for a pollution-free environment. This book comprises fourteen chapters that include scientific progress and recent technologies in biodegradation. Hopefully, this book will be useful for environmentalists, scientists and academics along with graduate and postgraduate students studying the research and practice of bioremediation. It will also provide useful information for experts in ecology, enzymology, environmental microbiology and biotechnology.

Bioremediation Technologies

Bioremediation Technologies PDF Author: Robert L. Irvine
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781566765619
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 700

Book Description
FROM THE INTRODUCTION This three-volume series, Bioremediation: Principles and Practice, provides state of the art description of advances in pollution treatment and reduction using biological means; identify and address, at a fundamental level, broad scientific and technological areas that are unique to the subject or theme and that must be understood if advances are to be made; and provide a comprehensive overview of new developments at the regulatory, desk-top, bench-scale, pilot scale, and full-scale levels. The series covers all media-air, water, and soil/sediment-and blends the talents, knowledge, and know-how of academic, industrial, governmental, and international contributors. The series addresses the removal of both hazardous and nonhazardous contaminants from the liquid, solid, and gas phase using biological processes. This includes the biological treatment of wastes of municipal and industrial origin; bioremediation of leachates, soils, and sediments; and biofiltration for contaminated gases.

Biotransformations in Organic Chemistry

Biotransformations in Organic Chemistry PDF Author: Kurt Faber
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319615904
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
This well-established textbook on biocatalysis provides a basis for undergraduate and graduate courses in modern organic chemistry, as well as a condensed introduction into this field. After a basic introduction into the use of biocatalysts—principles of stereoselective transformations, enzyme properties and kinetics—the different types of reactions are explained according to the 'reaction principle', such as hydrolysis, reduction, oxidation, C–C bond formation, etc. Special techniques, such as the use of enzymes in organic solvents, immobilization techniques, artificial enzymes and the design of cascade-reactions are treated in a separate section. A final chapter deals with the basic rules for the safe and practical handling of biocatalysts. The use of biocatalysts, employed either as isolated enzymes or whole microbial cells, offers a remarkable arsenal of highly selective transformations for state-of-the-art synthetic organic chemistry. Over the last two decades, this methodology has become an indispensable tool for asymmetric synthesis, not only at the academic level, but also on an industrial scale. In this 7th edition new topics have been introduced which include alcohol and amine oxidases, amine dehydrogenases, imine reductases, haloalkane dehalogenases, ATP-independent phosphorylation, Michael-additions and cascade reactions. This new edition also emphasizes the use of enzymes in industrial biotransformations with practical examples.
