The theme of this book is the development of partnerships between manufacturing companies, their suppliers and customers and the facilitating of these partnerships by information technology and telecommunications. In the 1980s the emphasis in manufacturing was on integration 'within the four walls' of the manufacturing plant. The main issues facing researchers and industrial practitioners at the time were CAD/CAM integration, integration of production planning and control systems, the development of sophisticated computer driven manufacturing, assembly and testing systems and their control through sophisticated shop floor control systems. Today the emphasis has moved towards supply chain management (integration of the supply chain through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Just in Time (JIT) or Quick Response approaches) and customer driven manufacturing. This includes the integration of manufacturing and distribution/logistics planning and control systems. Consequently, success for manufacturing companies in the 1990s requires closer collaboration with customers, suppliers and distributors than in the past. Information Technology and the emergence of a powerful global information infrastructure enable manufacturing industries throughout Europe to develop collaborative partnership across the value chain. Successful collaboration is achieved by the sharing of information at all phases of the business cycle, across the supply chain and across national and international boundaries. The need to collaborate across the supply chain has particular consequences for small and medium sized manufacturing (SMEs) companies, many of whom are compared and subassembly suppliers to the larger companies. Indeed the collaboration between supplier SMEs and their large customers has, in many cases, gone beyond JIT supply of components based on orders delivered, processed and frequently paid for using EDI technology and now extends to joint design and engineering activity. Collaboration between manufacturing companies across the supply chain is therefore placing increasing pressure on the developers of the global information superhighway and on the developers of CAD and other engineering software to ensure compliance with emerging standards, such as STEP, in order to allow intercompany collaboration. These are the issues which form the background of this book. The book is aimed at those researchers and industrial practitioners interested in learning about recent progress in manufacturing systems research and application. Mature results emerging from the ESPRIT-IiM programme are presented. This year has been yet another "applications" success for the conference with this volume containing seventeen papers describing either deployed applications or emerging applications. All these documented case studies provide clear evidence of the success of AI technology in solving real business problems. Six of these papers were nominated for the Best Application Award during the review process. These nominations were then reviewed by the members of the Programme Committee to select the winning paper. The papers in the volume were subject to refereeing by at least two referees. All papers which were controversial for some reason were discussed in depth by the Application Programme Committee. Ten referees from the industrial and commercial sector and nine referees from the academic sector assisted me in reviewing the papers. The review form asked the referee to score the papers according to a number of dimensions, to rate it overall, and to offer critical comments to me, and to the authors. It also asks the referee to score their expertise in the area of each paper they review. Only reviews from 'expert' referees are used.

PRICAI 2000, held in Melbourne, Australia, is the sixth Pacific Rim Interna tional Conference on Artificial Intelligence and is the successor to the five earlier PRICAIs held in Nagoya (Japan), Seoul (Korea), Beijing (China), Cairns (Aus tralia) and Singapore in the years 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998 respectively. PRICAI is the leading conference in the Pacific Rim region for the presenta tion of research in Artificial Intelligence, including its applications to problems of social and economic importance. The objectives of PRICAI are: To provide a forum for the introduction and discussion of new research results, concepts and technologies; To provide practising engineers with exposure to and an evaluation of evolving research, tools and practices; To provide the research community with exposure to the problems of practical applications of AI; and To encourage the exchange of AI technologies and experience within the Pacific Rim countries. PRICAI 2000 is a memorial event in the sense that it is the last one in the 20"" century. It reflects what researchers in this region believe to be promising for their future AI research activities. In fact, some salient features can be seen in the papers accepted. We have 12 papers on agents, while PRICAI 96 and 98 had no more than two or three. This suggests to us one of the directions in which AI research is going in the next century. It is true that agent research provides us with a wide range of research subjects from basic ones to applications.
