Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Physiology Physiology is the basis of medicine, and the further advance of these sciences depends mainly upon the experimental method. The medical student, the future physician, should undergo a training in practical physiology, for thereby he learns the most important of all lessons he learns to observe, to draw conclusions from his observations, and to unravel the causes of his failures. The importance of practical physiology is undoubted, but as to the nature and scope of the experimental work, which is most suitable for the medical student, there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of physiology. In this country, perhaps, too much stress has been laid upon the physiology of muscle and nerve for the hope that a study of the properties of these tissues will unfold the enigma of life is likely ever to remain without consummation. An advance in the knowledge of the living organism as a whole, one organ reacting upon another, has been gained by experiments upon the living animal, treated as a unit and not as a collection of separate organs and tissues. Such practical physiology needs extension in the courses of instruction given to students. It should, as far as possible, have a direct relation to medicine. Notes on Practical Physiology

Notes on Practical Physiology PDF Author: John Malcolm

Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Practical Physiology: For the Use of Students of Medicine This short description of the experiments usually performed in classes of Practical Physiology has been written specially for students attending the class of Practical Physiology at the University of Otago. The subject is treated in the order of the systematic lectures to enable students to study the theoretical and practical sides of the subject together. Inasmuch as Physiology, besides being an excellent ground for general scientific training, is a subject of direct importance in Medicine, due attention has been paid to those methods of clinical research that can be profitably pursued by medical students of the second year, but it is almost unnecessary to say that many of the experiments described are not directly applicable to the problems of disease. It would be difficult to give a list of all the works consulted in the preparation of these exercises, but for the convenience of students who wish to extend their knowledge, the author can recommend the following books to which he himself is much indebted, viz., the Practical Exercises in Stewarts Manual of Physiology; Milroj sPractical Physiological Chemistry; Porters Introduction to Physiology; and Practical Physiology by Beddard, Edkins, Hill, Macleod, and Pembrey. For those who can read German, Thierfelder sedition of Hoppe-Seyler sHandbuch der phys. u.path. chem. Analyse, and the Handbuch der phys. Methodik edited by Tigerstedt, now appearing in parts, are the best authorities on chemical and experimental work respectively. I am indebted to my friend, Mr. J. Brown, for the drawings in perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Physiology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners IT was the aim of the authors in writing this work for its original edition to gather within brief compass those facts of Physiology with which medical students should be familiar in order that they might successfully pursue the more advanced courses of the medical curriculum. It was not the intention to produce a work of originality nor one which should take the place of more elaborate text-books in the instruction of students, but one offering a means of quickly reviewing the essential features of the subject. The demand which exhausted successive printings of the first edition indicates that the work answered its purpose as a brief exposition of Physiology suited to the needs of students and practitioners, and it is hoped that this new and thoroughly revised issue may meet with equal favor.
