Advanced Intermetallic-Based Alloys for Extreme Environment and Energy Applications: Volume 1128
Author: Martin Palm
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781107408425
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The increasing demand for materials which enable a more efficient energy conversion - materials allowing higher operating temperatures and a lower weight of the components with preferably better corrosion resistance- has put intermetallic-based alloys back into focus. For example, the recent use of light weight, TiAl-based alloys for automotive and aerospace applications has spurred research on other intermetallic-based alloys. In addition to structural intermetallics for extreme environments encountered in advanced energy systems, this book also focuses on fundamental and interdisciplinary aspects of novel intermetallic-metal systems (e.g., Co-based superalloys) and functional intermetallics that can store energy, generate power and enhance reliability. Topics include: intermetallics for hydrogen storage and thermoelectric applications; iron aluminides - physical metallurgy; titanium aluminides - physical metallurgy; titanium aluminides - structure, properties and coatings; iron aluminides, titanium aluminides, nickel aluminides and silicides; nickel/cobalt superalloys and nickel aluminides; niobium and molybdenum silicide-based alloys; laves phases and fundamental aspects of intermetallics - phase stability, defects and theory.

Intermetallic-Based Alloys for Structural and Functional Applications:
Author: Martin Palm
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781107406858
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 484
Book Description
Symposium N, "Intermetallic-Based Alloys for Structural and Functional Applications," was held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at the 2010 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. Intermetallics for functional and structural applications were covered, and topics ranged from first-principles calculations and the investigation of thermodynamics of intermetallic alloy systems, through characterizing defect structures to the evaluation of mechanical properties, corrosion behaviour, and processing of intermetallic alloys. Within the realm of functional applications, investigations on NiTi-based shape memory alloys, intermetallic-related alloys for hydrogen storage, and intermetallic phases with thermoelectric or catalytic properties, were of major interest. For structural applications, aluminides of titanium, iron, nickel, and a variety of silicides were covered. Besides research on these more established intermetallic phases, recent advances in novel Co-based superalloys and basic research on Laves phases were presented. This volume presents a representative overview of the current state of research on intermetallic phases, providing an insight into the current state of development of individual intermetallic alloy systems and identifying areas for future research.
