Book Description
Ethiopian farmers have a variety of livelihood alternatives, including beekeeping. This book chapter discusses the extent to which farmers have adopted modern Hive Beekeeping Technology as well as the factors that influence adoption. Better beehive technology has a significant positive impact on honey output. Farmers are encouraged to adopt or continue using the technology because the return on investment, that is productivity increases, has been realized. Because improved beehive technology adoption has multiplier effects ranging from increased beekeeping productivity to economic growth and poverty reduction, the study,Äôs findings highlight the importance of appropriate policy implementation that promotes the adoption of productivity-enhancing technologies in general and improved beehive technology in particular. As a result, it is recommended that policies be developed to take advantage of the factors influencing farmers,Äô adoption of improved beehive technology. Furthermore, efforts should be made to increase access to improved beehives by introducing substitutes that can be built from locally available materials while lowering production costs, such as chefeka.

Beekeeping Technology Testing and Adoption
Author: Siddhi J. Bhusal
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783848440252
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 104
Book Description
Four initial level of colony strength: 4 frame (9,800), 6 frame (14,700), 8 frame (19,600) and 10 frame (24,500) adult honeybees per colony were tested for honey production and other colony attributes. The study revealed the exponential increase in honey yield producing 2.82, 1.59 and 1.18 times more honey from initially 10, 8 and 6 frame colonies than 4 frame colonies. The other colony attributes including comb building, brood rearing, syrup honey storage, bee bread storage and foraging activities were also positively correlated with initial colony strength. Another experiment testing three beekeeping packages namely, continuous brood rearing, initially brood-less and package bee colonies, for mite incidence and honey production indicated the delayed mite incidence in later two packages compared to continuous brood rearing colonies yielding 1.25 and 1.21 times more honey per colony, respectively. Training and social mobilization helped to aware beekeeping farmers to adopt modern beekeeping practices thereby improving annual honey yield and gross farm income from beekeeping enterprise.

The Tears of Re
Author: Gene Kritsky
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199361401
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 159
Book Description
According to Egyptian mythology, when the ancient Egyptian sun god Re cried, his tears turned into honey bees upon touching the ground. For this reason, the honey bee was sacrosanct in ancient Egyptian culture. From the art depicting bees on temple walls to the usage of beeswax as a healing ointment, the honey bee was a pervasive cultural motif in ancient Egypt because of its connection to the sun god Re. Gene Kritsky delivers a concise introduction of the relationship between the honey bee and ancient Egyptian culture, through the lenses of linguistics, archeology, religion, health, and economics. Kritsky delves into ancient Egypt's multifaceted society, and traces the importance of the honey bee in everything from death rituals to trade. In doing so, Kritsky brings new evidence to light of how advanced and fascinating the ancient Egyptians were. This richly illustrated work appeals to a broad range of interests. For archeology lovers, Kritsky delves into the archeological evidence of Egyptian beekeeping and discusses newly discovered tombs, as well as evidence of manmade hives. Linguists will be fascinated by Kritsky's discussion of the first documented written evidence of the honeybee hieroglyph. And anyone interested in ancient Egypt or ancient cultures in general will be intrigued by Kritsky's treatment of the first documented beekeepers. This book provides a unique social commentary of a community so far removed from modern humans chronologically speaking, and yet so fascinating because of the stunning advances their society made. Beekeeping is the latest evidence of how ahead of their times the Egyptians were, and the ensuing narrative is as captivating as every other aspect of ancient Egyptian culture.

Bees in America
Author: Tammy Horn
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813137721
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 488
Book Description
“Integrates history, technology, sociology, economics, and politics with this remarkable insect serving as the unifying concept” (Buffalo News). The tiny, industrious honey bee has become part of popular imagination—reflected in our art, our advertising, even our language itself with such terms as queen bee and busy as a bee. Honey bees—and the values associated with them—have influenced American culture for four centuries. Bees and beekeepers have represented order and stability throughout the changes, challenges, and expansions of a highly diverse country. Bees in America is an enlightening cultural history of bees and beekeeping in the United States. Tammy Horn, herself a beekeeper, offers a social and technological history from the colonial period, when the British first brought bees to the New World, to the present, when bees are being trained by the American military to detect bombs. Horn shows how the honey bee was one of the first symbols of colonization and how bees’ societal structures shaped our ideals about work, family, community, and leisure. This book is both a fascinating read and an “excellent example of the effects agriculture has on history” (Booklist). “A wealth of worthy material.” —Publishers Weekly
