This book is about international students from Asia studying at American universities in the age of globalization. It explores significant questions, such as: Why do they want to study in America? How do they make their college choices? To what extent do they integrate with domestic students, and what are the barriers for intergroup friendship? How do faculty and administrators at American institutions respond to changing campus and classroom dynamics with a growing student body from Asia? There are more international students enrolled in colleges and universities in the U.S. than in any other country as reported by the Institute of International Education. In the 2000/01 school year, the institute estimated that 547,867 inter-national students were studying in the U.S. As a response to the high number of international stu-dents, an increasing amount of literature has addressed the specific needs, unique experiences, and acculturation patterns of these students (Essandoh, 1995; Hayes & Lin, 1994; Pedersen, 1991; Sandhu, 1995). Adjustment is defined as the process through which individuals become inte-grated into a new environment, including the satisfaction of motivations and needs. Adjustment/Acculturation research on international students has revealed that varia-bles such as perceived discrimination, use of the English language, finances, and shorter time spent in the U.S. contribute to lower levels of adjustment. The impact of declared majors, length of stay, marital status, age, and gender in the adjustment process has also been addressed in several studies, revealing conflicting results.

Policy issues concerning foreign students that affect decision makers of U.S. colleges and universities were studied, along with the views of institutional representatives concerning the presence of foreign students, problems areas they perceive, and the formation and implementation of policy regarding these students. Attention was focused on three states: Florida, Ohio, and California, as well as two institutions in other states that are greatly involved in international programs: Columbia University and Michigan State University. In addition to the college staff and students, opinions were solicited from college trustees, state legislators, and aides to governors. The following policy issues were covered: the survival of certain fields of study in the United States; foreign students as "filler"; the export of higher education services; benefits to the local, state, and national economy; the special costs of foreign students; cost-benefit pricing of foreign student education; and the foreign student cash-flow issue. Arguments for careful inquiry by the institution into the question of foreign students, and implications for institutional organization are briefly considered. Issues that especially call for national attention regarding economic, socio-organizational, and educational areas are also addressed. The literature on international students from Africa, and particularly Kenya, is very limited despite the significant number of Kenyan international students attending colleges and universities in the United States. Therefore, the intent of this study was to examine the adjustment problems of Kenyan international students in the United States. The study employed acculturation theory as its theoretical framework because acculturation entails the adaptation process of individuals to a new environment. The current study utilized a quantitative approach to examine their adjustment issues. The Michigan International Students Problem Inventory (MISPI), the research instrument for this study, was used to examine the extent to which the independent variables (a) gender, (b) age, (c) marital status, (d) type of high school attended in Kenya, (e) home located in an urban or rural community, (f) enrollment status at university (graduate or undergraduate), and (g) form of tuition payment (self pay, institution, U.S. government, government of Kenya, or employer) influence Kenyan international students' adjustment to higher education in the United States. -- AbstInitially, the study employed purposive sampling to identify potential participants who are Kenyan international students attending various colleges and universities in the United States. From this initial group of participants, the sample was expanded using the non-probability sampling method of snowballing. Snowballing relies on the identification of new participants from individuals who were identified through purposive sampling and agreed to participate in the study. This process resulted in the identification of 300 potential participants. Electronic contact of these individuals yielded 158 participants for a response rate of 53%. The major adjustment problem areas for Kenyan international students were financial aid, and living and dining, while they were least bothered by religion and personal issues. Therefore, it is important that these problems be resolved in a timely manner to enable the students adjust quickly to their new environment. -- Absract.

The influx of international students studying at United States colleges and universities during the past five decades has presented many challenges related to accommodating the needs of these “special” students. In the early 1950s, fewer than 40,000 international students were enrolled within the higher education system of the U.S.; today that number has grown to more than 490,000 students. The problems confronted by these students are both numerous and complex. University personnel often address these problems by developing specific programs designed to meet the needs of the international students at their university. However, the perceptions of these problems by international students, faculty, and staff differ in important ways. To explore these problems in more detail, this study first collected data from 215 international students and 44 university personnel at one liberal arts university and a doctoral comprehensive university in the United States, both religiously affiliated, through the use of a well-established survey instrument. The responses from these two groups were then compared and analyzed through the use of paired sample t-tests in 11 possible areas of concern, ranging from health services to financial aid. After their responses were compared and analyzed, multiple regression analysis was then used to examine the extent to which the variation in their responses could be explained by a number of demographic factors. The findings of the study revealed that the university personnel on both campuses significantly overstated the problems of international students, although both groups considered the problems to be relatively minor. Since it was thought that the students would consider their problems more serious than the university personnel, this suggests that the two universities are responding appropriately to a large majority of the problems faced by international students on their campuses. When the student responses were examined in detail, country of origin time at the university, and the particular university attended proved to be significant factors in explaining the variance in the student responses, while gender, marital status, and major field of study did not.
