Book Description
Strong wind and moderate wind cases conducted as part of the Precision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer Experiment were analyzed in order to study marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) adjustment around two major coastal points. In the moderate wind case, MABL adjustments were observed upstream of both points, while in the strong wind case, adjustment was only observed upstream of one of the points. A rapid thinning and acceleration of the MABL were observed downstream of both points in both cases, consistent with expansion fan dynamics. It was found that flow often transitions from subcritical to supercritical around the points, leading to upstream blocking and downstream expansion fan adjustments. Lee thinning and acceleration were observed in the strong wind case; however, these adjustments are influenced by both flow around and over the coastal points. Three distinct layers were often observed in the lees of coastal points.

Pages : 112
Book Description
Almost half the U.S. population lives along the coast. In another 20 years this population is expected to more than double in size. The unique weather and climate of the coastal zone, circulating pollutants, altering storms, changing temperature, and moving coastal currents affect air pollution and disaster preparedness, ocean pollution, and safeguarding near-shore ecosystems. Activities in commerce, industry, transportation, freshwater supply, safety, recreation, and national defense also are affected. The research community engaged in studies of coastal meteorology in recent years has made significant advancements in describing and predicting atmospheric properties along coasts. Coastal Meteorology reviews this progress and recommends research that would increase the value and application of what is known today.

Atmospheric Rivers
Author: F. Martin Ralph
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030289060
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
This book is the standard reference based on roughly 20 years of research on atmospheric rivers, emphasizing progress made on key research and applications questions and remaining knowledge gaps. The book presents the history of atmospheric-rivers research, the current state of scientific knowledge, tools, and policy-relevant (science-informed) problems that lend themselves to real-world application of the research—and how the topic fits into larger national and global contexts. This book is written by a global team of authors who have conducted and published the majority of critical research on atmospheric rivers over the past years. The book is intended to benefit practitioners in the fields of meteorology, hydrology and related disciplines, including students as well as senior researchers.
