The focus of this study is the relationship between secondary school students' sense of cultural identity and their participation in sports. Recent studies by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the participation of Australian youth in sports and physical activities indicated that 25 per cent of young adolescents aged 12 to 14 years were not involved in sports. This figure rose to 36 per cent for students in one-parent families; to 44 per cent for those from overseas and non-English speaking countries. Other studies found that those of minority cultural background more often played Soccer, Australian Rules Football and Rugby than Cricket, Netball or Hockey. The participation of the larger minority ethnic groups of Australia within the established sports was the focus of a 1997 book, pointed to the need for studies which investigated individuals" personal understanding of their own and mainstream culture and how these factors influenced their involvement in sports. This study conducted such research with students from year 11 classes in six secondary schools in Adelaide. It adopted the humanistic sociological approach originating with the Polish-American sociologist Florian Znaniecki, and later developed by J J Smolicz for research on cultural pluralism in Australia. The concepts of group cultural values and individual personal cultural values were adopted to investigate individuals' participation in sport and their sense of cultural identity. The method involved collecting information on participants' personal and family background and analysing their written personal statements in to response open-ended guideline questions on their views and experiences concerning playing sport, and their sense of cultural identity.

A sense of belonging is a basic human necessity. High school is a place where adolescent development largely takes place. Cultural proficient leaders seek to create an environment which facilitates and embraces all types of cultures to accommodate all types of students. There has been research on how sports impact health and how a sense of belonging is important for success. Although there had not been research done especially on how soccer impacts a student's sense of belonging to a school. The reason for this research was that soccer is the world largest sport, therefore this researcher sought to answer the question, "In what ways does soccer participation impact a sense of belonging for high school students?" The focus of this research was for a soccer program within one high school in Southern California. The author concentrated on 28 soccer players who wrote reflective journals on how soccer impacted their sense of belonging to the school. The method for the research was qualitative case student that focused on 28 male high school soccer players. The researcher read the journals in which 88 in vivo codes were identified. The codes created categories which helped develop three key themes which were: building relationships, fostering health and creating a sense of identity. The three themes are qualitative evidence which resulted that soccer does improve a student's sense of belonging to the school. The author recommends that futures studies on the related topic should have a wider sample size, more than 28 and more schools. This area matters as the research found sports are a key place for students to build friendships. In conclusion the researcher saw that participation in sports directly impacts a sense of belonging, participation in soccer improves impact a student's sense of belonging to the school. The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is committed to keeping sports relevant and viable, whilst supporting all Australians to develop their physical literacy for active and healthy lives. The ASC is aware that the sport environment is changing and is dedicated to supporting our national sporting organisations to thrive and maximise their ability to contribute to participation outcomes. A key component of this commitment is the sharing of high-quality information, research and data to enable better decision making concerning participation. To address the decline in youth sport participation the ASC initiated the Youth Participation Research Project to better understand : what the barriers to sport participation are for disengaged students, and what interventions would effectively address these barriers, and sustainably engage and motivate youth to continue to participate in sport and physical activity. Initial research undertaken by the ASC found that the school environment provides an ideal opportunity to improve participation outcomes for the youth demographic. The Project would build upon the existing global research to provide a better understanding of what is successful in the Australian school context. The findings would inform the actions that the sport and education sectors could take to increase youth participation. Particularly, it would support sportsâ ability to develop youth specific products for the secondary school market. Whilst some sports have existing youth sport offerings in the secondary school market, many have not.
