The Evolution of Adam

The Evolution of Adam PDF Author: Peter Enns
Publisher: Brazos Press
ISBN: 1493432702
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Can Christianity and evolution coexist? Traditional Christian teaching presents Jesus as reversing the effects of the fall of Adam. But an evolutionary view of human origins doesn't allow for a literal Adam, making evolution seemingly incompatible with what Genesis and the apostle Paul say about him. For Christians who both accept evolution and want to take the Bible seriously, this can present a faith-shaking tension. Popular Old Testament scholar Peter Enns offers a way forward by explaining how this tension is caused not by the discoveries of science but by false expectations about the biblical texts. In this 10th anniversary edition, Enns updates readers on developments in the historical Adam debate, helping them reconcile Genesis and Paul with current views on evolution and human origins. This edition includes an afterword that explains Enns's own theological evolution since the first edition released.

Book Description
Good theology takes the newest science seriously. In this book, new findings about human origins, like interbreeding with Neandertals and the re-dating of the first tools and cave art, are brought together with a Christian theological vision of humanity created through evolution for unity and completion in Christ. Opening chapters presents the latest scientific research. In clear and accessible writing, key findings from major science journals are turned into a story that begins seven million years when our lineage separated from the line that leads to chimpanzees. Since then, we have changed slowly but dramatically. Surprising new discoveries about Homo naledi and the Denisovans are all interpreted within the larger context of the emerging scientific consensus about the complex origins of our humanity. We have taken on many forms, spreading out across the Old World, then sometimes reconnecting in ways that move evolution along. As we change, we create simple stone tools, refine them slowly, and finally begin to create art and culture.Chapter 8 looks at some of the ways in which science and theology were both misused in the past to support racism and domination. Chapters 9 and 10 provide the culminating theological vision of the book. Chapter 9 asks how we can evolve in the image of God. Eight different approaches to the meaning of ?image of God? are offered, and the book suggests a new way to think about this key theme in light of the science of human origins. Static views of humanity are set aside, and it is argued that for humanity to be in the image of God is for us to be moving toward the fullness of our destiny in Christ. This is developed in two ways Chapter 10. First, Christ completes our humanity, bringing to finality what God has patiently created. Second, Christ makes us all one. In Christ, God is making humanity one by uniting all our past forms, all our present diversity, and all our future possibilities into one redeemed humanity. By drawing on the latest science, this book offers a traditional and yet contemporary Christian view of humanity.

Book Description
Today's science is changing the way we see ourselves. We know now that Neandertals were not primitive brutes but that they interbred with our ancestors. We also know that interbreeding between ancient human populations played a key role in shaping humanity today. The End of Adam and Eve grows out of the conviction that good theology takes the latest science seriously. The most recent findings, like interbreeding with Neandertals and the re-dating of the first tools and cave art, are brought together here in a strongly Christian theological vision of humanity created through evolution for unity and completion in Jesus Christ. This book summarizes the science but also builds upon it to offer an updated Christian theological interpretation of human beings as created in the image of God and made into one new humanity in Christ.A brief excerpt from the final chapter..."As a flowing stream is separated by an island and then rejoins, human communities separated, changed, and then came back together genetically. To ask which group is human is to ask which branch is the stream."Diverging, we became many things. We became Denisovans, Neandertals, and many other unknown ancestral groups. By being them, we became us. Converging, we are still on our way to becoming one thing, one unified global human community. For Christians, our hope for one unified global human community has a concrete form. It has a name. It is Jesus Christ. Faced by all the racism and xenophobia that still work their violence and evil in our world, Christians defiantly and faithfully proclaim that Christ makes us all one. "

Adam and Eve Versus Evolution

Adam and Eve Versus Evolution PDF Author: Ronald Conte
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781502987716
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
This book argues in favor of Adam and Eve as two real historical persons, and also in favor of accepting evolution as one of the natural means that God uses to guide the unfolding of His Creation. Adam and Eve were created by God, miraculously, and they became the first parents of the entire human race. But God used evolution, under His providence, to prepare the form of the human body. Then God miraculously created Adam and Eve as the first two true human persons, and He gave them immortal souls with free will and reason. Some Christians reject evolution and other scientific theories, adhering instead to an entirely literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis. Others reject the historicity of Genesis, as if it were merely a collection of fictional teaching stories. When faith and science disagree, how should faithful Christians respond? We cannot reject the truths of our faith. But neither should we reject the gift of reason and the insights of modern science. Therefore, this book proposes that both the story of Adam and Eve, and the theory of evolution are essentially true, when properly understood. The early chapters of Genesis contain some literal historical elements along with many figurative elements. Adam and Eve were two literal historical persons. They each fell from grace by committing the first sins of the human race: original sin. But other elements of their story are figurative, including a forbidden fruit and a talking serpent. And the seven days of Creation are also figurative, not literal. The theory of evolution, in its main tenets, is compatible with this approach to the Bible, which sees both literal and figurative elements woven together in a single tapestry of truth. God created the universe, and He may well have done so in the manner described by science. God chose to create life on Earth, but that life developed and progressed largely as the theory of evolution explains. In addition, God's Providence has always guided Creation as a whole, and particularly life on Earth. He who created all things also created the principles of nature. God gave the principles of nature the role of governing the development of the universe as well as the development of life on Earth. For such is His plan for His Creation. Science has the role of discovering the inherent principles of all natural things. But science must not speak or act as if it were the judge over Faith. The theory of evolution fails on a few points. Evolution ignores the role of God in creating the first life on Earth, in governing the development of living things, and in choosing to create the human race. The idea that one species can evolve into another species is well proven; but the claim that life "evolved" from non-living chemicals is not. I believe that God intervened directly to create the first single-cell organisms on Earth. Subsequently, evolution, under the providence of God, developed that life, over the course of billions of years, into a vast array of plants and animals. But evolution eventually reached a "glass ceiling," after the development of the higher forms of animal life. For no natural principle is able to evolve or create an immortal soul with free will and the ability to reason abstractly. And so God intervened miraculously to create the first two human persons, Adam and Eve. After they fell from grace, these two became the parents of the whole human race. All human persons on Earth are descended from Adam and Eve.
