Erróneamente, a los profesionales sanitarios, se les inculca la idea, desde el momento en el que están llevando a cabo su formación, de que la parte más importante de su trabajo, se desarrolla en una UVI móvil, en las unidades de Cuidados Intensivos del hospital, etc. Por el contrario, nuestra opinión es totalmente diferente, pues donde realmente es importante la actuación del profesional sanitario, es en una unidad de Soporte Vital Básico, en una residencia de la tercera edad y, en general, en aquellos puestos o unidades en los que generalmente no hay un médico o personal facultativo presente, pues toda decisión tomada en base a su paciente, tendrá que ser llevada a cabo por cada profesional sanitario, sin poder apoyarse del personal facultativo de Medicina.Es por ello, que este texto no pretende ser un manual de primeros auxilios y, por ello no entramos en temas como el paciente politraumatizado, urgencias térmicas, traumatismos en general o intoxicaciones por picaduras o mordeduras, sino que nos basaremos en estudiar las patologías más frecuentemente tratadas en una ambulancia de Soporte Vital Básico, centros de salud o residencias de ancianos, donde de la actuación del profesional sanitario, dependerá en gran medida el destino y bienestar final del paciente.
