The Institute conducts unclassified basic research in applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and computer science in order to extend and improve problem-solving capabilities in science and engineering, particularly in aeronautics and space. The Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) is operated at the Langley Research Center (LaRC) of NASA by the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) under a contract with the Center. USRA is a nonprofit consortium of major U.S. colleges and universities. The Institute conducts unclassified basic research in applied mathematics, numerical analysis and algorithm development, fluid mechanics, and computer science in order to extend and improve problem solving capabilities in science and engineering, particularly in the areas of aeronautics and space research. ICASE has a small permanent staff. Research is conducted primarily by visiting scientists from universities and industry who have resident appointments for limited periods of time as well as by visiting and resident consultants. Members of NASA's research staff may also be residents at ICASE for limited periods. The major categories of the current ICASE research program are: (1) Applied and numerical mathematics, including multidisciplinary design optimization; (2) Theoretical and computational research in fluid mechanics in selected areas of interest to LaRC, such as transition, turbulence, combustion, and acoustics; and, (3) Applied computer science: system software, systems engineering, and parallel algorithms. ICASE reports are considered to be primarily preprints of manuscripts that have been submitted to appropriate research journals or that are to appear in conference proceedings. A list of these reports for the period April 1, 1996 through September 30, 1996 is given in the Reports and Abstracts section which follows a brief description of the research in progress.
