Book Description
The use of acoustic emission and acousto-ultrasonics to characterize impact damage in composite structures is being performed on both graphite epoxy and kevlar bottles. Further development of the acoustic emission methodology to include neural net analysis and/or other multivariate techniques will enhance the capability of the technique to identify failure mechanisms during fracture. The acousto-ultrasonics technique will be investigated to determine its ability to predict regions prone to failure prior to the burst tests. The combination of the two methods will allow for simple nondestructive tests to be capable of predicting the performance of a composite structure prior to being placed in service and during service. Workman, Gary L. and Walker, James and Lansing, Matthew Unspecified Center NAS8-38609...

Damage Detection in Composite Materials Using Acoustic Emission and Self-sensing Fibres

Damage Detection in Composite Materials Using Acoustic Emission and Self-sensing Fibres PDF Author:

Book Description
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the abilities of acoustic emission testing and self-sensing fibres to detect damage in composite materials. This was achieved by performing acoustic emission testing on fibre samples and resin samples during tensile tests. In parallel to the acoustic emission testing the changes in strain for the resin samples was recorded using electrical resistance strain gauges and fibre Bragg gratings. Acoustic emission testing of Self-sensing fibre composites allowed the recorded changes in the light intensity transmitted by the fibres to be analysed in conjunction with the acoustic emission data. The fabrication of the three different sample types is presented as is the installation of the electrical resistance strain gauges and fibre Bragg gratings. The experimental procedure and method of data capture is detailed for tensile and acoustic emission testing, strain data and Self-sensing fibre data. The fabrication and testing of the samples was performed successfully. The testing procedure and analysis of results demonstrates the accurate use of acoustic emission and the potential of self-sensing fibres in detecting damage in composite materials.

Acoustic Emission and Durability of Composite Materials

Acoustic Emission and Durability of Composite Materials PDF Author: Nathalie Godin
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119510511
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
In this book, two kinds of analysis based on acoustic emission recorded during mechanical tests are investigated. In the first, individual, analysis, acoustic signature of each damage mechanism is characterized. So with a clustering method, AE signals that have similar shapes or similar features can be group together into a cluster. Afterwards, each cluster can be linked with a main damage. The second analysis is based on a global AE analysis, on the investigation of liberated energy, with a view to identify a critical point. So beyond this characteristic point, the criticality can be modeled with a power-law in order to evaluate time to failure.

Damage and Repair of Aerospace Composite Materials

Damage and Repair of Aerospace Composite Materials PDF Author: Charles Lu
Publisher: SAE International
ISBN: 0768000998
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Damage and Repair of Aerospace Composite Materials reports the latest developments on the detection and repair of composite structures from the perspective of ten SAE technical papers, especially chosen for this book. This micro-collection of papers offers an overview of composite utilization on large-scale commercial aircraft as well as an outline of general damage inspection and repair of composite structures. On the damage detection side, really important techniques are explained, including: • Porosity inspection of large composite panels. • Damage detection of large composites using acoustic ultrasonic and radio frequency methods. • Discrimination of damaged and undamaged composite panels using acoustic emission sensors. • Automated defect inspection system integrated in the production line by utilizing laser sensors and cameras. The latest studies in damage repair of composite structures are also presented, including: • the design of a bonded repair technique for multilayer laminate composite panels. • the analysis on the performance of bolted repair vs. bonded repair. • the method for economically repairing the holes on composites. • the development of a novel cutting tool for the scarf repair of composites. • the use the 3D-printing technology to repair gaps and steps in large composite panels

Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures

Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures PDF Author: Rikard Benton Heslehurst
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 146658047X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.
