Mental and Behavioral Health of Immigrants in the United States reviews research on immigrant mental health, acculturation, and multicultural psychology. The book is divided into three sections: Section A addresses the geographic and social context of immigration, including how parents and children navigate the acculturation process, how different cultural orientations affect behavior, and research methods on acculturation. Sections B and C focus on mental health issues common to Latinx, Asian, and Arab/Middle Eastern immigrants, and then more broadly across immigrant groups. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, particularly for adolescents and young adults. Though depression is often a contributing factor in suicide, cultural influences may play significant roles, both as stressors and buffers to suicide attempts and completions. Unfortunately, our current knowledge of these cultural factors is limited, but there have been increasing efforts over the past decade to determine common and varying ethnic, as well as broader cultural, influences on suicide. Though even more limited, researchers and practitioners are beginning to develop culturally inclusive prevention and intervention efforts in order to decrease the likelihood of suicide, as well as offering postvention assistance. This chapter summarizes the suicide literature among African American, Asian American, Latino/a Americans, and American Indians.

Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and developed countries worldwide. In the United States, Latinos constitute the largest ethnic minority group. The increase in number of Latino immigrants and U. S born Latinos poses immense challenges for governmental, medical, and nonprofit institutions. These challenges are apparent in the efforts to address the mental health needs of current and future Latino populations. For instance, the literature shows that second or later generations of immigrants have a higher prevalence of mental disorders compared to first generation immigrants. The current study sought to identify the relationship between acculturation and depressive symptomatology using acculturative stress as a moderator variable in a sample of Latino participants from various settings. The current study examined two groups that varied in the level of acculturation High Hispanic-Low Anglo participants and High Hispanic-High Anglo participants. It was hypothesized that acculturative stress would be a moderator between acculturation and depression symptoms. It was predicted that High Hispanic-Low Anglo, high stressed individuals would show higher depressive symptom levels compared to High Hispanic-High Anglo, low stressed individuals. Moderation analysis showed that acculturative stress did not significantly moderate the relationship between acculturation level and depressive symptoms(~= -.174, p = .315). Abstract: Research has demonstrated that acculturative stress is an important influence on anxiety and depression in Latinos, however methodological issues limit generalizability of findings. The present study examines Latino subgroup (i.e., Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican) differences in the influence of acculturative stress on Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Secondary data analysis of data from 2,554 Latino immigrants in the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS) included stratified hierarchical logistic regression.
