Why Airplanes Crash
Author: Clinton V. Oster Jr.
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195361083
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
This work examines the causes of airplane accidents and what private and public policies are needed to improve aviation safety. It begins by examining the safety record of the United States commuter airline industry in the post-deregulation era characterized by increased emphasis by airlines on cost control and growing pressures on the air traffic control and airport system. The authors go beyond the safety of the scheduled airlines to examine the reasons for accidents in the nonscheduled and general aviation segments of the United States industry, where the bulk of fatalities occur and where airline pilots increasingly receive most of their training and experience. They then turn to an examination of aviation safety throughout the world, first with a detailed comparison of Canadian and American aviation safety, and then with a look at air safety in all regions of the world and the safety performances of all the world's major airlines. Three emerging issues are then examined in greater detail: assessing the margin of safety, worldwide aging of all airline fleets, and terrorism.

Encyclopedia of African Airlines
Author: Ben R. Guttery
Publisher: Ben Guttery
ISBN: 9780786404957
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 291
Book Description
The rainy season, terrain, and financial hardships have made the construction of highways and railroads nearly impossible in many parts of Africa. This lack of modern infrastructure has been overcome in some part by the development of air transportation. Hundreds of carriers--both small and large, government owned and private--have connected all parts of the continent. Together, they have had a tremendous impact on the African economy and the people. Country-by-country, this comprehensive reference work provides brief histories of over 700 airlines in 54 African nations. Each entry has the years of operation of the carrier, along with information on its origin, growth, and route structure. Aircraft usage, including registration numbers and nicknames, is covered in many cases. Any crashes involving aircraft in the carrier's fleet are also noted. An appendix gives the location of all major African airports.

The Role of Air Tanzania in Air Transport in East Africa
Author: James J. Spillane, S.J.
Publisher: Sanata Dharma University Press
ISBN: 6236103046
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 191
Book Description
When President John Magufuli became the head of the Tanzanian Government in 2015, he immediately prioritized the tourism sector as a key to getting the country into the middle category of developing countries. A key player in this strategy is the Government owned Air Tanzania. It actually began in 1977 during the time of the East African Economic Community. Unfortunately, Air Tanzania has a long history of ups and downs, especially mismanagement by politicians and high corruption. Based on an extensive collection of newspaper clippings, this comprehensive book has been written on the history and experience of Air Tanzania. This material would be very helpful and valuable for other developing countries.
