The name Access-ALAS is derived from two sources. The first source is the Microsoft Access software used to perform the analysis of the crash data. The second source is ALAS (Accident Location and Analysis System), which originates from the Iowa Department of Transportation mainframe program and the personal computer version (PC-ALAS) which replaced the original mainframe version. Access-ALAS has a wide range of possible uses.
