First published in 1993 this volume is an extension and revision of the 1986 book entitled Religious Schools in America: A Selected Bibliography. This new version contains additional annotated bibliographies of the various denominational schools as well as discussing governmental relation to each setting in the years from 1985 to 1992. This version also covers Greek Orthodox and Muslim schools that were not part of the previous volume and includes a chapter on the growth of home schooling which is often influenced by religion. Finally, unlike the previous edition, this book only considers religious schools, rather than the religious aspect or function of public schooling. Each section includes a short chapter followed by an extensive annotated bibliography making it a useful source for anyone looking for information in the area.

In this book, David Novak conducts an historical, philosophical and theological reflection on the central Jewish doctrine of Israel's election by God, also known as the idea of the chosen people. Historically, he analyses the great change in modern Jewish thought brought about by Spinoza's inversion of the doctrine: that it was not God who elected Israel, but Israel who elected God. The development of that inversion is illustrated by the thought of the German philosopher-theologian, Hermann Cohen. Philosophically, Novak explores the ontological implications of the two differing theologies of election. Theologically, he argues for the correlation of election and revelation, and maintains that a theology of election is required in order to deal with two central questions, namely: who are the Jews, and how are Jews to be related to the world? The life of Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides) remains a mystery to many within evangelical Christianity. However, he is lauded as a second Moses by many within modern Judaism. Does he deserve that title? Maimonides's via negativa created a rationale for rejecting the messiahship claims of Jesus in Rabbinic Judaism. Therefore, this book seeks to illustrate that Maimonides, in his desire to create an anti-Christian apologetic regarding the incarnation, fashioned a Judaism that does not reflect the truths of the Tanakh (Old Testament) and developed a Judaism that was untenable for the Jewish people of the twenty-first century.
