In order to provide quality advising to the increasingly diverse student population, academic advisors should engage in ongoing professional development in the area of social justice. This study used an original survey to examine (1) advisor familiarity and agreement to concepts and statements related to social just advising practices, (2) the professional learning in which staff advisors engage, and (3) the professional learning opportunities advisors view as useful to develop and implement principles of equity, inclusion, and social justice into practice. With a sample of 163 participants, the survey collected both quantitative and qualitative data, allowing for descriptive statistics and basic qualitative analysis. The study found that overall, advisors self-reported a high level of familiarity with terms related to social justice and high agreement to value statements related to social justice. While overall ratings were high, the concept of Institutional Racism rated lower on the familiarity than many other terms, and was the lowest rated for agreement to a value statement. Results were also examined based on populations of students advisors worked with, as well as by advisor ethnicity, which produced only small differences in mean ratings. The study also identified on campus professional learning opportunities, specifically department/unit trainings, campus conferences, and staff development courses, as having the highest rate of participation. The narrative responses on the survey revealed five overarching themes important to social justice development, with the three most prominent themes including: a) specific formal and structured on campus learning opportunities, b) offerings with diversity in experiences and learning styles, and c) individual work and personal experiences. Findings from this study could help shape future professional learning opportunities and help determine areas to invest future resources to best fill the needs of academic advisors in their social justice development.
