This manual summarises information on the ecology and silviculture of the species Acacia mangium Willd, with an emphasis on Vietnam. It also encompasses growth and yield data from published sources, as well as collected from sites under smallholder industrial plantations in Phu Tho Province, Vietnam. This manual is 1 of 5 that guide smallholder tree planting of 5 selected tree species in Vietnam. The other 4 species are: Acacia hybrid, Cinnamomum parthenoxylon (Jack) Meisn, Erythrophloeum fordii Oliver and Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake. The Government of Vietnam is carrying out a large-scale ‘reforestation’ programme, with the aim of improving local livelihood security, environmental sustainability and industrial wood supply. Smallholders are involved in plantation timber production through various schemes. Generally, these reforestation efforts have been effective, even though smallholders often lack the appropriate technical knowledge and management skills. Consequently, the quality and quantity of wood products may be suboptimal. The productivity of smallholder plantations can be improved by enhancing smallholders’ management knowledge and skills, including species selection (site matching), silvicultural management to produce high quality products, and pest and disease management.

Vietnam Acacia hybrid was selected by Acacia mangium across A. auriculiformis. Five clones was introduced from Vietnam by exchange forest seeds. Four test plantation was built in South China including Jiangmen(JM), Hepu(HP), Zhangzhou(ZZ) and Chuxiong(CX). Acacia hybrid could grow, flower and fruit at the four sites and productivity were all higher than CK after two years. Five hybrid Acacia clones were all higher than CK on high growth character, and were ranked as ZZuff1eJMuff1eHPuff1eCX. The height of clone No. 73 was 5.2m and more 24% than CK. There were significant difference on diameter of breast height(DBH) between clones and CK at the four sites. Clones DBH were all bigger than CK and ranked as HPuff1eZZ=JMuff1eCX. The DBH of clone No. 73 was 5.0cm and more 35% than CK. The individual volume of clone No. 73 was 0.0042m3 at HP site. The wind-fall rate of Acacia hybrid clones were 35% , CK was 67% after typhoon Rammasun 2014 at HP site. The wind folding resistance of each clone of typhoon Rammasun was in order No.73= No.75uff1eNo.10uff1eNo.71uff1eNo.16uff1eCK. It was short-term snowed at CX site December 2013. The cold resistance which was evaluated by survival rate were No. 10uff1eNo. 73uff1eNo. 16= No. 75uff1eCKuff1eNo. 71. According to the comprehensive evaluation of different weight of volume (60%), stem shape (20%), survival rate (10%) and stress resistance (10%), clone No.73was the best one, followed by No.71 and No.16.
