Scattering and Absorption of Gamma Rays

Scattering and Absorption of Gamma Rays PDF Author: Milton Spinoza Plesset
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Gamma rays
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
A formulation is presented of the scattering and absorption of gamma rays in different materials. The range of gamma ray energies considered is from 1 to 10 m(c squared). Results are given for the transmission of gamma rays through air and lead. (Author).

Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation

Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation PDF Author: Felix A. Aharonian
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789812561732
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 516

Book Description
Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic ?-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. The great potential of this discipline offers impressive coverage of many OC hot topicsOCO of modern astrophysics and cosmology, such as the origin of galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays, particle acceleration and radiation processes under extreme astrophysical conditions, and the search for dark matter."

Science With The Cherenkov Telescope Array

Science With The Cherenkov Telescope Array PDF Author: The Cta Consortium
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9813270101
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
This book summarizes the science to be carried out by the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, a major ground-based gamma-ray observatory that will be constructed over the next six to eight years. The major scientific themes, as well as core program of key science projects, have been developed by the CTA Consortium, a collaboration of scientists from many institutions worldwide.CTA will be the major facility in high-energy and very high-energy photon astronomy over the next decade and beyond. CTA will have capabilities well beyond past and present observatories. Thus, CTA's science program is expected to be rich and broad and will complement other major multiwavelength and multimessenger facilities. This book is intended to be the primary resource for the science case for CTA and it thus will be of great interest to the broader physics and astronomy communities. The electronic version (e-book) is available in open access.

Absorption of Gamma-Rays

Absorption of Gamma-Rays PDF Author:

Pages : 21

Book Description
In the evaluation of experiments on gamma ray attenuation and in the general problem of shield design it is necessary to have accurate knowledge of absorption coefficients as a function of gamma ray energy and of atomic number. Even a cursory examination of the literature reveals surprisingly large discrepancies among the values quoted by various authors, differences of five or ten percent of the total coefficient being not uncommon. An attempt is made here to compile a table of coefficients which is representative of the best experimental data available at the present time, and to give an estimate of the accuracy of the values given. Except for a quite limited range of the variables involved, it has been found that theoretical formulae, as given in standard textbooks, cannot in general be relied upon to give the absorption coefficients with an accuracy of five percent. This seems to be attributable, in most cases, to various approximations which enter the theoretical calculations of cross sections for photoelectric absorption and for pair production.

The Hubble Deep Field

The Hubble Deep Field PDF Author: Space Telescope Science Institute (U.S.). Symposium
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521630979
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is the deepest optical image of the Universe ever obtained. It is the result of a 150-orbit observing programme with the Hubble Space Telescope. It provides a unique resource for researchers studying the formation and evolution of stars and galaxies. This timely volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the HDF and its scientific impact on our understanding in cosmology. It presents articles by a host of world experts who gathered together at an international conference at the Space Telescope Science Institute. The contributions combine observations of the HDF at a variety of wavelengths with the latest theoretical progress in our understanding of the cosmic history of star and galaxy formation. The HDF is set to revolutionize our understanding in cosmology. This book therefore provides an indispensable reference for all graduate students and researchers in observational or theoretical cosmology.
