Hans Nintzel added this work to the R.A.M.S. Library in 1982. It is from the British Museum printed book, 122 pages, 8905 A 15 in German "Donum Dei" (Samullis Baruch), "Abraham the Jew" (in German), 87 pages bound with 9005 A 15. Abraham Eleazar was probably a fictitious name used by the author. It appears that the book was first published in Leipzig in 1760 with the title, "R. Abrahami Eleazaris Uraltes Chymisches Werk," although an edition from 1735 is said to exist (see Note at the end of the Forward). The author might have been Julius Gervasius of Schwarzburg. The Forward states that the author took illustrations from the copper tablets of Tubal-Cain, a person mentioned in Genesis 4:22.

The idea of heavenly ascent, while popularized in Jewish mysticism, is neither a unique nor recent one. Expertly tracing its origins back to the ancient Middle East, Levenda unearths ascent literature in Africa, India, and China, discerns a common connection in the heavens themselves, and determines that this connection has been sorely neglected in contemporary scholarship. Because scholars treat the "heavens" as metaphorical, it is necessary to recreate the physical context of the culture under discussion in order to better understand it. Scattered over much of the world throughout most of their history, are the Jews one people or many? How do they resemble and how do they differ from Jews in other places and times? What have their relationships been to the cultures of their neighbors? To address these and similar questions, some of the finest scholars of our day have contributed their insights to Cultures of the Jews, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award upon its hardcover publication in 2002. Constructing their essays around specific cultural artifacts that were created in the period and locale under study, the contributors describe the cultural interactions among different Jews–from rabbis and scholars to non-elite groups, including women–as well as between Jews and the surrounding non-Jewish world.
