Book Description
The Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (NFESC), Port Hueneme, California, and its industrial partners, Vista Engineering Technologies, L.L.C., and Vista Research, Inc., have demonstrated and validated (DEM/VAL) an innovative mass-based leak detection system for aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). The Low-Range Differential Pressure (LRDP) system is a computer- controlled system that can reliably detect small leaks in ASTs, which range in size from 50,000 gal to ASTs with diameters of over 260 ft and containing over 10,000,000 gal of petroleum fuel. While no specific national regulatory requirements presently exist for ASTs, stringent state requirements are forcing Department of Defense (DoD) facilities to take their tanks out of service to install double bottoms and perform interstitial monitoring. With a validated, high-performance, in-tank leak-detection system for ASTs, like the LRDP, an alternative strategy is now available that is cost effective and does not necessitate taking the tank out of service. The results of the evaluation showed that the LRDP has the performance to meet the monthly monitoring and annual precision (tightness) test regulatory compliance requirements set for bulk underground storage tanks (USTs) using a test that takes less than 24 h to conduct. This project was performed under the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (TNTCP). The objective of the ESTCP is to demonstrate and validate innovative environmental technologies that are needed to address the environmental objectives of the DoD, that are cost effective, and that will be ready for the development of commercial products and services at the completion of the DEM/VALs. All of the objectives of the project have been met, and the LRDP is ready for and is currently in commercial use.

Nfpa 30

Nfpa 30 PDF Author: National Fire Protection Association
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780064641173
Category : Automobile repair shops
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
Trust NFPA 30's protocols to minimize the hazards of flammable and combustible liquids. Adopted by most states and enforceable under OSHA, NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code presents the best guidance on the safe storage, handling, and use of dangerous liquids. It provides the criteria you need to design facilities for better protection, comply with sprinkler rules, and use safe operating practices. Changes and additions in the 2003 edition affect: * Siting of storage tanks * Spill control, normal breather vents, and emergency relief vents for storage tanks * Design of liquids storage cabinets, inside storage areas, and liquid warehouses * Sprinkler design rules for storage of all types of liquids * And more When you work with flammable and combustible liquids, even a seemingly minor oversight or mistake can have major repercussions. Don't compromises safety--insist on NFPA 30!

Corrosion in Systems for Storage and Transportation of Petroleum Products and Biofuels

Corrosion in Systems for Storage and Transportation of Petroleum Products and Biofuels PDF Author: Alec Groysman
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400778848
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
This book treats corrosion as it occurs and affects processes in real-world situations, and thus points the way to practical solutions. Topics described include the conditions in which petroleum products are corrosive to metals; corrosion mechanisms of petroleum products; which parts of storage tanks containing crude oils and petroleum products undergo corrosion; dependence of corrosion in tanks on type of petroleum products; aggressiveness of petroleum products to polymeric material; how microorganisms take part in corrosion of tanks and pipes containing petroleum products; which corrosion monitoring methods are used in systems for storage and transportation of petroleum products; what corrosion control measures should be chosen; how to choose coatings for inner and outer surfaces of tanks containing petroleum products; and how different additives (oxygenates, aromatic solvents) to petroleum products and biofuels influence metallic and polymeric materials. The book is of interest to corrosion engineers, materials engineers, oil and gas engineers, petroleum engineers, chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, failure analysts, scientists, and students, designers of tanks, pipelines and other systems for storage and transportation fuels, technicians. Best Management Practices for Environmental Issues Related to Highway and Street Maintenance

Best Management Practices for Environmental Issues Related to Highway and Street Maintenance PDF Author: William Albert Hyman
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 9780309068505
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en

Book Description
This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency environmental and maintenance administrators, directors, supervisors, engineers, and scientists. It describes current best management practices (BMPs) for environmental issues related to road and street maintenance. The synthesis documents relevant background and recent information with regard to management practices that can help protect, preserve, or enhance the environment while at the same time allow road maintenance organizations to carry out their fundamental mission of maintenance and repair in a cost-effective manner. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes BMPs consisting of broad management approaches applicable to the entire maintenance program or to more than one program area. In addition, BMPs for specific maintenance activities or groups of maintenance activities are included. Finally, BMPs concerning specific environmental issues are discussed.
