Coherent high frequency oscillations near the electron plasma frequency (omega approx. less than omega sub p) are generated by electrodes with positive dc bias immersed in a uniform Maxwellian afterglow plasma. The instability occurs at the sheath-plasma resonance and is driven by a negative RF sheath resistance associated with the electron inertia in the diode-like electron-rich sheath. With increasing dc bias, i.e., electron transit time, the instability exhibits a hard threshold, downward frequency pulling, line broadening and copious harmonics. The fundamental instability is a bounded oscillation due to wave evanescence, but the harmonics are radiated as electromagnetic waves from the electrodes acting like antennas. Wavelength and polarization measurements confirm the emission process. Electromagnetic waves are excited by electrodes of various geometries (planes, cylinders, spheres) which excludes other radiation mechanisms such as orbitrons or beam-plasma instabilities. The line broadening mechanism was identified as a frequency modulation via the electron transit time by dynamic ions. Ion oscillations at the sheath edge give rise to burst-like RF emissions. These laboratory observations of a new instability are important for antennas in space plasmas, generation of coherent beams with diodes, and plasma diagnostics. Stenzel, R. L. The experiments were conducted under conditions where the electron Langmuir frequency of the plasma, was less than the electron cyclotron frequency. The conditions of wave excitation in the beam and plasma, their frequency spectra, phase velocities, amplification factors, electrical field intensity, and absolute values and spectral distribution of excited oscillation power are determined. Experimental results from measurement of frequencies, amplification factors and phase velocities of excited oscillations in the plasma are in satisfactory agreement with calculated data. (Author).

This analysis is concerned mainly with oscillations and fluctuations which occur either spontaneously, or as a result of deliberate excitation, in low-pressure, hot-cathode plasmas. Experimental observations on high and low frequency effects occurring spontaneously are discussed, and speculations are made on the possible gener-ATION MECHANISMS. In many cases, theories of these mechanisms have been treated in experiments involving deliberate excitation of oscillations, and comparisons are made where relevant. For device applications, and to relieve the difficulties which occur in quantitative experiments in plasma physics, it is important that the sources of spontaneous oscillations should be understood and suppressed if possible. The analysis includes a discussion of work which has been carried out to reduce these effects, and concludes with some suggestions for further lines of attack on the problems. (Author).
