War Comes to Aachen

War Comes to Aachen PDF Author: Philip W. Blood
Publisher: Hurst Publishers
ISBN: 1805262556
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
This book narrates the tumultuous era of total war through the fate of Aachen—Imperial Germany’s seat of power for 600 years, site of Charlemagne’s coronation as Holy Roman Emperor, and a place with greater geopolitical significance for Adolf Hitler in 1944 than Stalingrad in 1943. This was a stark contrast with the events of the Great War: in 1918, the Imperial German Army had abandoned Aachen in a rout-like flight. In the Nazi period, however, Aachen became a major symbol of Germany’s defiance against the Allies. For Hitler—his mind warped after surviving the Stauffenberg bomb plot—Germany’s westernmost city became pivotal in his last-ditch defence of the ‘thousand-year Reich’. War Comes to Aachen weaves together the city’s story from 1900, tracing its entrenched Catholic orthodoxy, its growth as an industrial urban centre, the demise of democracy, the rise of Nazism, the two world wars, and the Holocaust. The book surveys Churchill’s wartime leadership and the destruction of pre-war Aachen through the lenses of military history and the anthropology of aerial bombing. Philip W. Blood’s absorbing history concludes with Allied efforts to reshape German society after 1945, and with the use of remembrance as a means of socio-political control.

Albert of Aachen's History of the Journey to Jerusalem

Albert of Aachen's History of the Journey to Jerusalem PDF Author: Albert (of Aachen)
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 9781409466529
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Albert of Aachen's History of the Journey to Jerusalem presents the story of the First Crusade (1095-1099) and the early history of the crusader states (1099-1119). Volume 1, The First Crusade, is a long and richly detailed account of events well known from the reports of participants, but told from a strikingly different perspective. His History therefore offers a counter-balance, and sometimes a corrective, to the established view. Susan B. Edgington's English translation has been widely praised, following its first publication in the Oxford Medieval Texts series, and is here presented with a new introduction and updated notes and bibliography.

Aachen Forum on Gear Production

Aachen Forum on Gear Production PDF Author: Thomas Bergs
Publisher: Apprimus Wissenschaftsverlag
ISBN: 3985550123
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
Although gears have been indispensable components in various sectors such as mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and industrial gear manufacturing for many decades, increasing requirements and current market developments are constantly presenting the transmission technology industries with new challenges. In modern gear transmissions, competition, besides the price, is determined by load-carrying capacity, operational reliability and noise excitation behavior. In the automotive industry in particular, reliable transmissions with high power density, low weight and minimal noise emissions are required. The current trend towards e-mobility, as well as general ecological and economical challenges to improve resource efficiency, lead to increased demands on gear quality and surface finish. In this context, the finishing and quality inspection of gears take on central roles. As the finishing of gears has a significant influence on their operational behavior, the reliability of the processes must be continuously ensured with regard to a high quality of the work result. Therefore, at this year's Aachen Forum on Gear Production, which is organized hand in hand by the WZL of RWTH Aachen University and the Research Association Transmission Technology (FVA), the focus is on finishing processes and quality inspection of gears. The spectrum of topics ranges from process and tool design in line with requirements to the manufacturing of individual gear geometries and measures for continuous quality assurance. Aspects of modern finishing processes for the generation of superfinished surfaces, quality inspection during production, and the economic efficiency of production and application are presented. The objective of the Aachen Forum on Gear Production is an exchange of knowledge and experience between engineers who are employed or have responsibility in the design, development, production, assembly, and application of gear drives. The individual technical presentations feature both manufacturers of machines and tools as well as users who report on their own practical experience. In addition, there are interesting presentations by research experts.

Albert of Aachen: Historia Ierosolimitana, History of the Journey to Jerusalem

Albert of Aachen: Historia Ierosolimitana, History of the Journey to Jerusalem PDF Author: Albert (of Aachen)
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199204861
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1012

Book Description
The Historia Ierosolimitana, attributed to Albert of Aachen, is the most complete, detailed and colourful of the contemporary narratives of the First Crusade, and of the careers of the first generation of Latin settlers in Outremer. This English translation, with original Latin text, has been prepared from a critical study of the manuscripts. Generating interest in previously disregarded aspects of crusade and settlement in the first decades of the twelfth century, it is set to alter the focus of crusades studies.
