Book Description
The final frontier is final for a reason. It is the end of the road. It is the last stand. It is the boundary that will never be crossed successfully by your man. And is that a good thing? I suppose it is! And why is that? Because once you conquer the final frontier, there is nothing left. There is no mystery, no challenge, no worthwhile target to achieve. You do not want to understand her anyway, but if you could, (don't worry you won't) the let-down may be crushing and would likely result in a boring existence that neither a man nor a woman would ever want. It is just like sex. You never will achieve everything you want and that is why you keep coming back for more.

C. S. Lewis on the Final Frontier

C. S. Lewis on the Final Frontier PDF Author: Sanford Schwartz
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199888396
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Sanford Schwartz offers a penetrating new reading of Lewis's celebrated Space Trilogy. Taken together, Schwartz's readings call into question Lewis's self-styled image as a "dinosaur" out of step with the main currents of modern thought. Far from a simple struggle between an old-fashioned Christian humanism and a newfangled heresy, Lewis's Space Trilogy should be seen as the searching effort of a modern religious apologist to sustain and enrich the former through critical engagement with the latter.

The Last Frontier

The Last Frontier PDF Author: Howard Fast
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317455967
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
Originally published in 1941, The Last Frontier is the story of the Cheyenne Indians in the 1870s, and their bitter struggle to flee from the Indian Territory in Oklahoma back to their home in Wyoming and Montana. Some 300 Indians, led by Little Wolf, fought against General Crook and 10,000 troops, with only 60 finally making it through to freedom. Fast extensively researched this book in the late 1930s, visiting and speaking with Cheyenne experts in Norman, Oklahoma. This was the first of Fast's many books to gain a wide popular audience; it was eventually made by John Ford into the classic film Cheyenne Autumn (1964).

Pioneer Women

Pioneer Women PDF Author: Joanna L. Stratton
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1476753598
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
From a rediscovered collection of autobiographical accounts written by hundreds of Kansas pioneer women in the early twentieth century, Joanna Stratton has created a collection hailed by Newsweek as “uncommonly interesting” and “a remarkable distillation of primary sources.” Never before has there been such a detailed record of women’s courage, such a living portrait of the women who civilized the American frontier. Here are their stories: wilderness mothers, schoolmarms, Indian squaws, immigrants, homesteaders, and circuit riders. Their personal recollections of prairie fires, locust plagues, cowboy shootouts, Indian raids, and blizzards on the plains vividly reveal the drama, danger and excitement of the pioneer experience. These were women of relentless determination, whose tenacity helped them to conquer loneliness and privation. Their work was the work of survival, it demanded as much from them as from their men—and at last that partnership has been recognized. “These voices are haunting” (The New York Times Book Review), and they reveal the special heroism and industriousness of pioneer women as never before.

Final Frontier

Final Frontier PDF Author: Brian Clegg

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Star Trek was right — there is only one final frontier, and that is space... Human beings are natural explorers, and nowhere is this frontier spirit stronger than in the United States of America. It almost defines the character of the US. But the Earth is running out of frontiers fast. In Brian Clegg's The Final Frontier we discover the massive challenges that face explorers, both human and robotic, to uncover the current and future technologies that could take us out into the galaxy and take a voyage of discovery where no one has gone before... but one day someone will. In 2003, General Wesley Clark set the nation a challenge to produce the technology that would enable new pioneers to explore the galaxy. That challenge is tough — the greatest we've ever faced. But taking on the final frontier does not have to be a fantasy. In a time of recession, escapism is always popular — and what greater escape from the everyday can there be than the chance of leaving Earth's bounds and exploring the universe? With a rich popular culture heritage in science fiction movies, books and TV shows, this is a subject that entertains and informs in equal measure.

The Age of Perversion

The Age of Perversion PDF Author: Danielle Knafo
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317529278
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize Winner for 2018 (Theoretical Category) We have entered the age of perversion, an era in which we are becoming more like machines and they more like us.The Age of Perversion explores the sea changes occurring in sexual and social life, made possible by the ongoing technological revolution, and demonstrates how psychoanalysts can understand and work with manifestations of perversion in clinical settings. Until now theories of perversion have limited their scope of inquiry to sexual behavior and personal trauma. The authors of this book widen that inquiry to include the social and political sphere, tracing perversion’s existential roots to the human experience of being a conscious animal troubled by the knowledge of death. Offering both creative and destructive possibilities, perversion challenges boundaries and norms in every area of life and involves transgression, illusion casting, objectification, dehumanization, and the radical quest for transcendence. This volume presents several clinical cases, including a man who lived with and loved a sex doll, a woman who wanted to be a Barbie doll, and an Internet sex addict. Also examined are cases of widespread social perversion in corporations, the mental health care industry, and even the government. In considering the continued impact of technology, the authors discuss how it is changing the practice of psychotherapy. They speculate about what the future may hold for a species who will redefine what it means to be human more in the next few decades than during any other time in human history. The Age of Perversion provides a novel examination of the convergence of perversion and technology that will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, social workers, mental health counselors, sex therapists, sexologists, roboticists, and futurists, as well as social theorists and students and scholars of cultural studies.

A Last Frontier

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Today messages are sent with the click of a mouse. Few of us have time anymore to sit down and hand write a letter. E-mail is in and with the press of a key the written words disappear as if they had never been. Sadly the handwritten letter is becoming a thing of the past. In 1955 when two young starry-eyed Americans left to take up their post in northeast Thailand with the United States Information Agency there was no such thing as E-mail. Had there been this memoir would not exist. In Korat, Thailand communication by means other than a letter required advance planning, practice and patience. An overseas call had to be reserved in advance. The call was made from a radio station via short wave. It was a frustrating exercise in speak, stop, over and listen, speak, stop, over and listen. Letters took two, sometimes three weeks to arrive; thus answers to questions came six weeks after the fact. Despite the time lapse our weekly letters home were treasured, passed around and saved. Today these letters tell the story of a different time, a distant place and a forgotten era.
