Energy and Water Efficiency in Multi-Unit Residential Buildings

Energy and Water Efficiency in Multi-Unit Residential Buildings PDF Author: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Policy and Research Division
Publisher: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
ISBN: 9780662332879
Category : Apartment houses
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Implementing energy and water efficiency is a crucial consideration for today's property managers and building owners. Energy and water costs in multi-residential buildings can account for anywhere from 25% to 50% of total operating costs. While amendments to building codes and standards over the past 20 years have improved energy and water performance in newer buildings, over 50% of housing was constructed prior to 1980. Few of those have been upgraded to today's standards of energy efficiency. Improving energy and water efficiency can decrease operating costs, reduce maintenance fees, lower tenant turnover rates, increase the asset value of property, and extend the life of the building. CMHC, in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (OMMAH), has developed a manual that details energy and water efficiency measures for existing multi-unit residential buildings. The document is based on a manual originally developed by the Ontario Ministry of Housing in the early 1980's. The new manual offers proven, current energy efficiency measures for the building envelope, mechanical, electrical, and domestic hot water heating systems. Both the User Guide and Technical Manual are designed to assist property managers in implementing an energy and water conservation program in mid- and high-rise residential buildings. They can be used to help organize activities, develop detailed energy and water conservation plans, and provide an understanding of which energy and water efficiency measures are best. The User Guide provides advice on how to manage activities, from conducting an energy/water preliminary assessment, determining appropriate conservation measures, estimating payback and the development of an energy/water plan. The Technical Manual outlines in detail more than 60 energy and water conservation measures for multi-unit buildings. Each provides basic details on assessing the viability of measures in relation to the specific requirements of buildings, as well as recommendations on integrating measures into ongoing maintenance, repair and/or renovation/retrofit work. Each measure can be used in isolation, in selected groupings, or integrated into any maintenance, repair and/or renovation/retrofit work on the building. Note: Individual energy and water efficiency measures have been placed on the CMHC high-rise website as the energy and water efficiency "Tip of the Week". The manual will form a part of the reference material for a series of energy management seminars being organized by the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association in the spring of 2004.

Water Efficiency in Buildings

Water Efficiency in Buildings PDF Author: Kemi Adeyeye
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118456572
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This reference source on water efficiency in buildings provides comprehensive and up-to-date information. Both multi-disciplinary and practical, it signposts current knowledge, innovation, expertise and evidence on an important subject which is high in the resource management debate. Water Efficiency in Buildings: a review of theory and practice is structured into five sections: Policy; People; Building Design and Planning; Alternative Water Technologies; and Practical Examples & Case Studies. This final section of the book presents new and current practice as well as lessons learnt from case examples on the use of water saving technologies and user engagement. Current evidence is vital for effective policy making. The dynamic nature of issues around water resource management creates a higher need for robust and reliable data and research information that can inform policy and regulations. This compendium provides a roadmap for researchers and building professionals on water efficiency as well as for policy makers and regulators. The case studies and research presented fall within the water supply and demand spectrum, especially those that focus on process efficiency, resource management, building performance, customer experiences and user participation, sustainable practises, scientific and technological innovation. The benefit and impact of the research is at the localandnational level, as well as in the global context.

Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans

Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans PDF Author: Lisa Maddaus
Publisher: IWA Publishing
ISBN: 1780405235
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
Many communities are facing water scarcity in developing and developed countries alike. There are numerous publications and on-going research studies documenting the changes in our climate and potential for worsening shortages in our future. Meeting future potable water demands as communities continue to grow will rely heavily on using our existing water resources more efficiently. Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans provides detailed approaches to developing and implementing a water conservation plan. This book covers the broad spectrum of conservation planning for urban communities including achieving more efficiency from: Residential domestic uses Commercial and governmental facilities use Industrial uses Pricing Water Loss Control Programs The steps in the Guide clearly outline and provide sample calculations to aid determining which water use efficiency activities are financially justifiable to undertake. The end result is a plan that policy decision makers can adopt and fund, and that water service provider staff can implement to help increase their community's water reliability. It includes numerous case studies and a Microsoft Excel based software tool to allow planners to evaluate the business case for implementing various water conservation activities. This book is an essential resource for professionals in water and wastewater resources, particularly for planners and engineers. It is also a useful guide for Post Graduate and Undergraduate students. Author(s): Lisa Maddaus, William Maddaus and Michelle Maddaus, Maddaus Water Management Inc.
