A Voice of Their Own

A Voice of Their Own PDF Author:
Publisher: Tuscaloosa : University of Alabama Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
A Voice of Their Own explores the consciousness-raising role of the American suffrage press of the latter half of the 19th century. From the first women's rights convention - a modest gathering of 300 sympathizers led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton - grew the ever-expanding movement for equal rights, greater protection, and improved opportunities. Although the leaders of that and subsequent conventions realized that such public rallies, with their exhortative speeches, were crucial in gaining support for the movement, they also recognized the potential impact of another medium - the women's suffrage periodicals, written and published by and expressly for women. The 11 essays of this volume demonstrate how the suffrage press - in such works as Woman's Journal, Woman's Tribune, Woman's Exponent, and Farmer's Wife - was able to educate an audience of women readers, create a sense of community among them, and help alter their self-image.

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Book Description
With this book, the editors have brought to light a little-discussed aspect of ranching: the valuable contributions of women in an industry traditionally thought of as the domain of men. To them, the ranch means many things; it is a business, a home, and a place to raise their children. In their own words, they share their experiences, their successes, and their hardships, and clearly demonstrate the important role women have played, and continue to play, in the history and economy of the ranching industry in Canada.

A Voice of My Own: A Thought Bubbles Picture Book About Communication

A Voice of My Own: A Thought Bubbles Picture Book About Communication PDF Author: Louise Jackson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000504786
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 22

Book Description
The characters in this book communicate in different ways. Can you work out what they mean through their voices, gestures and expressions? With growing concerns around mental health, and in the wake of a period of uncertainty and change, it is more important than ever to pay attention to how young children express their emotions, and to teach them to articulate their thoughts in a healthy way. This beautifully illustrated picture book has been created to teach children about the importance of communication, both in finding their own ‘voice’ and listening to others, however they communicate. By demonstrating how easy it can be to interpret a non-verbal communication system, it encourages children to notice and talk about non-verbal cues, giving them the opportunity to actively listen and reassuring them that they will be listened to. When it comes to child and adolescent mental health issues, prevention and early intervention are key. The ‘serve and return’ format of this book provides a virtual space where children can explore thoughts and feelings, teaching them that they can feel safe and heard.

Voice of Her Own

Voice of Her Own PDF Author: Marlene A. Schiwy
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 0684803429
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
As writers such as Virginia Woolf, Audre Lorde, and Anais Nin recognized, keeping a journal is a powerful tool of creative expression and self-healing. In A Voice of Her Own - a companion for both new and longtime diarists - Marlene Schiwy shows that journal writing is the ideal way to find one's individual voice, an opportunity for women to explore feelings, intuitions, perceptions, and ideas often suppressed in our society, and to record the truths of their own experience. Schiwy invites readers to share the journeys other women have made toward selfhood and encourages them to begin a journey of their own. She weaves together passages from published and unpublished journals, from works of literature, psychology, and women's studies with her personal insights. A Voice of Her Own is a treasure chest of inspiration for every woman seeking deeper self-awareness and new outlets for creativity.
