Book Description
From the early 1900's, the University of Tulsa had a baseball team, until it dropped the sport in 1980. Year by year the players and coaches built the program into an elite program that was consistently recognized nationally in the top 10 rankings with frequent rankings of number one in the nation. As baseball players always say, "What is said and happens in the dugout, stays in the dugout." The 1969 team became Tulsa University's first men's sport to compete for a national championship by playing in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. They finished runner-up to Arizona State. The team returned back to the College World Series in 1971, finishing third. But that was only one chapter in the amazing story of players and coaches that built a program that "feared no opponent and expected to win every game." On the cover, "The View from the Dugout" is the chronicles of the history of the Tulsa University baseball program as told by the former players, news journalist, and friends that experienced "The Glory Days of TU Baseball."

From the Dugouts to the Trenches
Author: Jim Leeke
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 1496201612
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
2018 SABR Baseball Research Award Winner Baseball, like the rest of the country, changed dramatically when the United States entered World War I, and Jim Leeke brings these changes to life in From the Dugouts to the Trenches. He deftly describes how the war obliterated big league clubs and largely dismantled the Minor Leagues, as many prominent players joined the military and went overseas. By the war's end more than 1,250 ballplayers, team owners, and sportswriters would serve, demonstrating that while the war was "over there," it had a considerable impact on the national pastime. Leeke tells the stories of those who served, as well as organized baseball's response, including its generosity and patriotism. He weaves into his narrative the story of African American players who were barred from the Major Leagues but who nevertheless swapped their jerseys for fatigues, as well as the stories of those who were killed in action--and by diseases or accidents--and what their deaths meant to teammates, fans, and the sport in general. From the Dugouts to the Trenches illuminates this influential and fascinating period in baseball history, as nineteen months of upheaval and turmoil changed the sport--and the world--forever.

Five Months on the Missouri River
Author: Thomas Elpel
Publisher: HOPS Press
ISBN: 9781892784506
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
This archetypal story of adventure in Montana involved carving and paddling a dugout canoe along the Missouri River like the famed explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Author Tom Elpel was privileged to live out this long-time dream when he connected with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain Clark. Together they whittled a 10,000 lb. Douglas fir log down to a 500+ lb. canoe. Tom led a five-month "Missouri River Corps of Rediscovery" expedition, paddling this 2,341-mile segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail from Three Forks, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri. Tom and friends paddled the Missouri River as a conduit for exploring the land and meeting its inhabitants. Every campsite offered a new opportunity to hike and explore the geographical landscape and geology, identify plants, and forage for wild foods. They enjoyed a leisurely pace paddling through the heart of America while diving into Lewis and Clark history and the history of Native American tribes along the route. They were assisted by many River Angels along the way, meeting some of the nicest people on the planet. Throughout the journey, Tom wrote a weekly column that was published in newspapers along the Missouri River corridor. He fleshed out the story for the book, filling in additional details and whole new essays, accompanied by seven hundred stunning color photos from the adventure. "Five Months on the Missouri River" is tantalizing in its imagery, and anyone who picks up the book to look at the pictures will quickly be captivated by the story following the expedition from the beginning until its conclusion.
